Hey guys. I am that fucked off that I have just created a Facebook page for people who have to pay these stupid charges for recovering your own stollen cars/bikes. It's https://www.facebook.com/VictimsOfTheft

Please can you like it and put any experiences you have had in the past with this bollocks. I would very much appreciate it. I plan on going all the way to that chode Mr Cameron if I have to so I thought I would start somewhere. It's really important that I get you guys on board as bikes are easier to steal than cars to an extent and there's thousands of you! Please also add me (Dave Wild) and share the page with friends.

There isn't many likes at the moment as I have just set it up but I am serious with this and intent on following it through!

Thanks for your time! Very Happy

so who should pay the recovery company to send a £100k truck out to pull the remains of your bike out of a river?

That goes to foreign aid, supporting immigrants and banks.

Mate, our tax barely covers the NHS, education, emergency services and the benefits system. Never mind council tax for our rubbish e.t.c.

We're having to cut down on hospital beds, and police presence on our streets.

Are you right in the fucking head? Are you genuinely for real?

Yes I pay tax, so should they recover me for free when i get a puncture on the M3?

Do people not have insurance?

Whoever pays for it, you will pay for it ultimately either through higher tax or higher insurance.

surely the all the taxes i pay should pay for this?

Soon the police will be asking us to bung them a £20 to pay for the petrol when they visit you when you have been burgled and some people in England would accept this it seems.

I think people seem to have become brainwashed over the past few years on what you should pay for as a tax payer.

I think asking someone for £170 because they towed there stolen property 2 or 3 miles down the road and shoved in a garage is a bit rich really.

Surely the registed owner should be given 48 hours grace period to collect the vehicle at no charge if it has been stolen. It seems funny that you can go to bed one night and owe the police/recovery company hundreds of pounds with no form of agreement.

I think i need to set up a business that works on the principle where the customers have no knowledge that they have bought something very expensive even if they dont want it.

ps. its never happened to me but it really pisses me off that a system has been created like this. Thats GREAT BRITAIN for you

Hi mr biker, your bike has been found but there is a burglary 2 miles away we need to get off to, I know you are at work for another 3 hours but you need to get down to pick up your bike pronto before the lowlife come back for it.

or maybe

Hi, bike found burnt out in the woods, can you come and get it?
Oh, no transport? Whatever, we don't contact a recovery service any more as people won't pay for it but feel free to spend all night wheeling it out on a skateboard.

Still happy?

You are a bike owner, you are aware that if your bike is stolen then it will need recovering if found, the money you pay pays the recovery company the national agreed fee, this is the same amount as charged to people who break down on the motorway with no cover.

As someone who has alarms, locks fencing and cctv should i be paying extra to cover recovery costs of someone who dumps their bike unlocked in a backstreet in birmingham while they spend all day in work and expect it to still be there later?

I think you're all looking at this the wrong way. Why don't we charge the criminals? We have a victim of crime surcharge on every fine so why isn't the cost recovered from the guilty parties (or in the case of a surcharge 'all' guilty parties)

That way the victim doesn't pay, the tax payer doesn't pay, and instead the thieving, robbing, drug dealing low life do... Seems to work well for all parties Thumbs Up

My bike was found 2 minutes away from where it was stolen. It was then recovered to a yard 4 miles away. Why should I be happy paying when I was never given the choice to pick it up myself?

I am a big believer in being fair with people where I can. I recovered a stolen off-road bike a few months back. I rang the owner, left a voicemail after he didn't answer, and sat with the bike for over half an hour waiting for him to ring me back. I wanted him to have the chance to recover it himself without incurring the recovery fee. He didn't ring me back, so I had to get it recovered. I then sat there another 45 minutes waiting for recovery to collect it. I think that's more than fair. Because it wouldn't have been fair for me to ring the owner, tell him where it was and leave it behind in the hope that he might get to it before someone else did.

Unfortunately somebody has to pay the recovery company, and it shouldn't really be the responsibility of the police to pay for it. I can see why it's frustrating to have that mixed emotion when the police ring and say "We've got your bike back... but there's a bill to pay before you can get it." But the police recover the bike on your behalf, or your insurer's behalf, not for their own benefit. It is to allow the vehicle to be returned safely. It is the same when you have a collision and the police recover it for you. The bill can often be passed on to the insurance company to pay, it's worth asking.

Failing that, if the thief is found and convicted, they can be made to pay through the courts if the victim has suffered a financial loss.

I'm fairly sure that when you report it stolen, you can request that it isn't recovered?

We generally choose to be on the motorway though.

On a quick reading of RTRA 1984, it appears that the recovery charge can actually only be recovered from the person responsible for putting the vehicle in the place from which it was recovered, i.e. the thief, not the owner.

Could be a fun one to fight over a cheap hack.

What do you propose, really?

Once you 'have you way' and the recovery is stopped and they stop recovering, what then?

Because the current system doesn't enforce thieves to pay how we do, so your brainwave wont. Laughing

Then it's not being applied correctly.

Don't take my word for it, read the primary legislation.

Recover is from "any person responsible".

"person responsible", in relation to a vehicle, means—

(a) the owner of the vehicle at the time when it was put in the place from which it was removed as mentioned in subsection (1) above, unless he shows that he was not concerned in, and did not know of, its being put there;

(b) any person by whom the vehicle was put in that place;

Homework: find any modification to that Act that actually allows charging the owner.

In fact, there is more than enough money to cover all those services with a fair whack left over.

It's a shame it isnt used correctly.
e.g.
The cost to swap out a standard USB laser mouse in the NHS averages £75.

A council, can't remember which, pays £22 for a standard lightbulb which costs 25p anywhere else.

Every time I had a bike stolen I was given the choice of recovery and had the 150 quid fee explained to me. Every time I of course declined.

Met police are pretty good for that it seems. Try campaigning to make all areas ask you if you want recovery when you report a bike stolen. That would prolly get a better response. Thumbs Up

Meanwhile, Facebook have issued a statement advising that despite a trillion likes and shares, they have still been unable to cure cancer.

Seething with rage? Sick of the injustices of this world? Why lobby your local MP when you can get people to 'like' a Facebook page instead?

Fuck. Me.
