My missis sold her YBR125 and bought a ER6 she phoned Swinton Sick to cancel the YBR insurance thats paid up and has 6 months left, only to be told she needs to pay £10 to cancel!!! Even if she takes out insurance with them for the ER6. Are these people for real Middle Finger Best way surely is to leave the insurance on the YBR running?

I'm guessing it wasn't an expensive policy then.
I'd leave it running for the NCB.

How much extra were they asking for change of bike? when I sold my 125 and got a bigger bike I phoned and told them and it only cost me £25 to change the cover over to the new bike.

But I'd expect to pay slightly more if its a completley different bike, larger engine, different value etc.

I'm in the same boat, I'm part exing on Friday, 2 months in to a new policy £110 for the year, to switch to the new bike £88 quid, or to cancel I'll get £25 back.

Got quotes online for £133 for the year.

Robbing fuckers.

Just been battling and wasting the time of the phone monkey to justify and reduce the admin fee of £35. No dice.

There was a story in one of the mags about a guy who did this as he only had a month of the policy left. Turned out the guy who bought the bike didn't insure it and was involved in a collision with a pedestrian. As there was insurance still valid on the bike the insurance company had to pay out but were seeking damages of around 25k from the previous owner as he failed to cancel the policy.

Yes they do but it's after they've took an admin fee off it.

i agree Hetzer, personally a better system would be everyone has an automatic 3rd party insurance and road tax, and they stick 3p a litre on the pump price.

but whilst Insurance Premium Tax exists the government won't get rid of a nice little earner.

Within 14 days you've got a statutory right to get a pro-rata refund less "the reasonable cost of setting up the policy". Even at that, some of them try to hit us with "cancellation" charges which are expressly prohibited. See Ayn Rand for that one.

After that, you've got a right to nothing. Read your contract. If you don't like it, or they refuse to show you one before you sign up, take your money elsewhere.

If you choose not to read the small print and go with the cheapest quote, well, you've just explained why they do it and get away with it.

It'd be a cold day in hell before they got a penny of that £25k from me. Foisted on their own admin-charging greed, the thieving filth.

What? Its the rider that's insured. The fact the new owner didn't have insurance is his fault. I can see how not cancelling a policy could cause problems, but wouldn't expect to be liable.

It's written into the primary legislation.

With a very few exceptions[*], if any third party is injured or suffers loss from a vehicle that's covered by a insurance policy, then regardless of who, why or how it happened, then the insurer should pay out to them as though it was their policyholder who was driving.

This is to protect 3rd parties, and it's realpolitik: insurers have deep pockets, and can spread the pain over their policyholders. If you were mashed up by a stolen car being driven by some 15 year old chucklehead, you'd be delighted that this law is on the books.

However, it's also explicit that the insurer can then pursue the policy holder if they've been left unreasonably exposed to risk. As we're discussing here, that includes leaving a policy running after the vehicle is out of your hands.

This is why you should tell an insurer that they must no longer cover your vehicle if it's sold, or nicked. Note carefully that I didn't say "tell them it's been stolen" or "tell them to cancel the policy".

But get a record that you've told them that the vehicle is no longer in your possession and they must not indemnify its use. You can argue cancellation charges later.

[*] The exception is someone in a TWOCed vehicle who knew or should reasonably have suspected that it was TWOCed.

When I sold my bike and was moving overseas, I called to cancel. There was too long left for me to have the year count as another towards my NCB, but not enough left for me to get anything back.

I thanked the monkey for nothing, noting that being honest with them had really been a poor idea.

Any changes on your policy will involve an admin charge as well as cancelling it. New job, moving house etc will mean paying out. Iv just had to pay £30 as iv moved house. The kick in the teeth was that the policy didn't go down even though iv moved to a much nicer, safer and statistically safer area Mad

But you just know it would have gone up if you'd moved to somewhere shittier.

That's nothing compared to the rip off they tried on me when I went from my YBR Custom to my Fazer. Nothing.

Had the same bother last year.

Wanted to change bikes 3 months in. 160 to change it for 9 months.

Or take out a new one with them for 210 in which case they'd waive the fee to cancel the old one 50 odd quid.

Got a quote elsewhere £160 for a years cover.

50 odd quid to cancel (the policy only cost 70 or something for the year) was ridiculous.

Paid the 160 to change on current policy ill ride it out till it runs out and then ill never use them again. Not that they care.
