Advanced Road Skills?

I stumbled upon this link while checking out options of advanced driving for insurance discounts, and if it's actually worth it..

But that to me, seems all complete common sense, so is that just a proportion of the whole thing or is that with a practical lesson no better than watching 'the racers edge'?

I did a 4 hour session just the other day with an advanced instructor, the topics listed in relation to corners and position was mentioned, but the whole session was on the bikes out on the road.
First 30 mins was him following and making an assessment of improvement areas (asked to ride at a quick pace on unknown roads), from there he showed/explained methods to further read unknown roads and allow me to keep up a pretty fast pace, also managed to get a few tips on increasing my corner speeds too. I was surprised really, as I have been riding for 10 years, so thought I was pretty competent!

I'm glad you had a good experience, but those training days are not for me. My aim isn't to go faster on the road, or increase my corner speeds. I hope he mentioned looking for hazards, reading the road for debri, hidden entrances etc. That info is free, along with common sense.

Corner speed is what I would expect to be taught on the track.

i want to do this soonish... it's subsidised in ceredigion so you only have to pay £30 for it.

instructor said get new bike, get familiar with it, and then come back to book advanced rider course.

The 10% discount is not worth the cost of the training.

Butt.... some folks actually ride better when they know how to ride 'properly'.
to pass a test you are instructed 'To Pass a Test' not much more in the remit.

Your bike trainers normally offer advanced riding but IAM is the one most folk know of.
Pipe and Slippers in the top box or membership of the Caravan And Camping Club will follow this

Buy the road craft book for less than a tenner and study. You do not need to ride to the letter but if you have ten bob's worth of common that wee book WILL make your riding more confident and enjoyable.

Try the book then book the IAM if you feel you must. Both are good one or t' other also good.

Training is the secret. REALLY, EXPERIENCE IS THE SECRET BUT TRAINING GIVES YOU FINE POINT EXPERIENCE. (And really, my keyboard is about to be snapped, in two, over the edge of this fcuking desk if it doesn't stop making me look like a right silly cbnut.)

I've been on a free advanced ride/lesson.
Surprisingly good and informative. I improved my riding a bit, MPG got better and pillion comfort increased.

I'm planning to take a full test. 10% discount on insurance is more than the price of the test for me. Yes, I do live in London

Forgot to mention, it depends on your instructor a lot as to what you get out of it, the guy up here was a police biker for years, then became the guy that trains them, also is the Advanced examiner (can't be examined by him if you train with him though) so knows what he is talking about, and is happy to let you wind it up a good bit too (some don't, so avoid them)
