I'm looking at getting a 696 or a 796, but really want to know about the reliability as they used to have a bed reputation.

Also it looks like the services charges are exorbitant, but due to the distance between services, the cost works out about the same as any other bike. Is this right ?

Anyone got ideas about how reliable they are now, and if I get it serviced at my small local dealer, will it affect the warranty ?

I had a Ducati monster, other than not starting all winter, the reliability engine wise was pretty good, and I ragged the shit out of it all the time and may have used Tesco value engine oil once. Laughing

Although rust and corrosion was an issue after winter

Yeah, I once had one of those Cool

The Ducs that friends have owned have always seemed reasonably reliable, although most of the fasteners went rusty fairly quickly. The only thing they complained about was service costs, to my memory.

A Monster costs the same if not less to maintain than other bikes. The newer Monster are fine reliability wise. I would go for the 796 as you would soon want the extra power.

For servicing go with a recommended independent specialist as opposed to a main dealer. Or you could do stuff your self as they are pretty easy to work on, air cooled twin!

Head over to ukmonster.co.uk great advice and very friendly Thumbs Up

Agree with rac3, the newer monsters since 2007 had a cheaper service schedule and longer service times. Belts are every 2 years. My wife has a 620 monster which is 11 years old and 22k on clocks. During its time in reliability its seen off many friends jap bikes who have had issues. Its been to Italy France Germany touring and never missed a beat except on the way back once at 16k when we realised the chain had come to the end of its life..

Electrics since 02 are as modern and if not better than others out there. Engines are a proven design with improvements on each model. Loads of accessories etc.

Personally go for the 1100 evo....But yes 796 if its choice of the 2. From memory think this is as quick as my s2r1000 was.

make sure you test ride it for good distance as its totally different than a 4. They always feel under geared in 5th and 6th and don't like to pull from low down like a 4 in these so it feels like its chugging. But its more getting used to their character and riding appropriately. Once a decent can fitted you will grin ear to ear.

PS ukmonsters.co.uk is a great forum for monster lovers.

Also just remembered the 696 has no radiator and can feel like your cooking your bits if stuck in traffic. The 796 has a oil rad and much better. When the 696 first came put my mrs test rode 2 of the 696s but honestly felt it didn't offer anything more than her 620 which is slightly tricked up, other than being quicker. So again I would look to the bigger bike.

"Convince the missus"? So...you're a man? A batty man?

Monsters are for burds. Maybe an old S2R1000 or S4R would be acceptable for a heterosexual male but the new Monsters are touched by the hand of metrosexuality.

You might as well get a Gladius and spend the difference on tight T-shirts with plunging necklines.

Er, hello - I'm rather quite comfortable with my metrosexuality, thank you very glad. And I regard your comments as bordering on the discourteous. Now jolly well button it, will you? At least if you don't have anything nice to say.

on an unfaired bike I reckon I could change them in half n hour, and at £40 a pair they're affordable.

I'll have you know they use the finest liquorice bonded with kevlar.

Here's a side by side comparison of a 5yr old belt and new.

I think 2 years is erring on the safe side and 5 years is starting to push my luck.

Belts from a bike used most days of the year.

OK. I took a 796 out for a spin & liked it, but as a 2nd bike only. Too much feathering of the clutch to use for commuting every day into the city, but excellent quality machine.

Went out & bought a ** BRAND NEW** Hornet & collecting it on Saturday Very Happy

I contemplated getting a Hornet after reading good things about them. I understand why you'd prefer a smoother delivery of power at slower speeds. It's one thing that twins don't do very well, even with today's improved fuelling.

@Copycat73

You can get some parts cheaper straight from a Ducati dealer. Phone them and compare to the online auction site.

only had one issue with my bike in the last 6 years, faulty quick shifter

they are reliable - but go 2 teeth down on the from sprocket if using it in town a lot, if you are below 10 stone 1 tooth would be fine

Coming from the overweight autisitc spacker who lives in squalor, doesn't shower and tries to come across as being better than everyone. You can ignore me all you want, but we all know who you are just like you have been kicked off many forums for being a monstrous cock smith.

Hows your £3 Audi with the £20k tuning kit that you only paid £6k for?

Are you still banned on the KTM forum for being a bellend?

The only reason you haven't been banned from here is because you flounce every time you come back, I can actually here the flounce starting.

Well a quick google did come up with this, and it seems legit

I mean come on, you must realise at some point you're an unwanted social reject at life when many forums on the internet have users, that go out of their way to show much of a cock schnaffler you are.
