Pitted forks repairing with araldite mot pass?

My bike has pitted forks, they aren't that bad i cleaned them up and got all the rust and clean as a whistle. I am gonna put the araldite precision on and then sand down after say 14-24 hours, I shall then polish it off with autosol. I was just wondering tho will it still pass mot? If they see i have repaired it in that way will it still pass or should i buy some gaitors, as i heard they can't move the gaitors at a mot. Has anyone any experience in this? Many thanks.

Could you have a word with an MoT tester way before you take it for the MoT? That way, if they tell you it wouldnt pass then you have time to sort it out.

If they don't leak then they pass the mot. If you do it well then it will last a fair while to! Wink

Could you have a word with an MoT tester way before you take it for the MoT? That way, if they tell you it wouldnt pass then you have time to sort it out.


My mechanic told me to just leave it, he said it has a 50/50 chance of passing, but i'd prefer to at least bodge it up in the meantime i just spent a good chunk of my wages on servicing the bike and need a few weeks to save up to get proper repairs.

Now, bear in mind that Im about as good at mechanics as Susan Boyle is a model I would perhaps look at tidying them up and then putting some form of cover over them.

As you said they shouldnt be able to remove the gators but even if they did as long as the job is neat and tidy and your bike is in a safe condition then I cant see a problem.

However, Im NOT an MoT tester so am not qualified to answer that question to any authority.

I keep hearing they aren't allowed to remove the gaitors at a mot, but i haven't found any information on if it is true. Just hoping it passes ! Smile

It will fail for leaking fork seals.

If they are not leaking, it can't fail for that.

The tester is not allowed to remove fork gaitors if they are fixed securely.

Nor are they are not allowed to prise up your fork dust seals to check for rolled up wads of toilet paper that may or may not have been inserted under them half a mile before the MOT station.

Ok, as I said Im not a tester myself. My landlord is a tester however he is a car tester so what he says may not apply here.

They are not allowed to move things, but certain things they can.

Example 1 - You fit a baby seat in the front passenger seat. They can NOT remove this as if they took it out and refitted it incorrectly and you had an accident and your baby went flying through the windscreen they would be responsible. In this case they would put f n/s seat belt not tested.

Example 2 - You have rust problems in the back of your car so you fold the rear seats forward to hide it. The testers ARE allowed to move the seats back.

Now, I suppose it may depend on the tester. I have a shaft driven bike so they cant check it as it would involve taking a case off and dripping 4 litres of oil on the floor, so as long as the unit is not leaking oil they have to pass it. I took it to a tester in Thetford and he failed it on the basis that the u/j was worn and dangerous. However, we later proved that the tester was a wanker and he was trying to rip me off for about £600 worth of work. When I recently changed the engine we looked at the u/j and it was perfect.

So, it depends on the tester. I think the golden rule with tests is take it to a tester you trust. If you dont like moody MoT`s then take it to a tester who also doesnt like moody tests. By using a regular guy you get to know him and he gets to know you. Perhaps your tester may fail a bike on tyres when they are borderline, perhaps another hates pitted forks especially when the owner has the cheek to cover then with gators.

Also, when is the MoT due?

Why not put the bike in for the test a month before its due. That way if it did fail it does NOT invalidate the current test certificate and you will still have 30 days in which to get it sorted. Then if you can get it done within 10 working days the test fee is (I think) half price.
