Pointless video is pointless.

It doesn't indicate anything other than how annoying screaming children are.

That was surprising, but even so, would that helmet even get past the testing for our market?

Mainly shows that you shouldn't buy a helmet without safety test approved markings on it.

Interesting tho

No idea, with a stronger shell, probably.

I'm unsure which country it's shot in, that'd probably give you a vague idea what if any tests it passed.

All it tells you is that the helmet doesn't survive a hammer. It doesn't tell you if the helmet has passed EU standards. It doesn't simulate real world conditions (as best can be simulated), e.g the rider's neck absorbing some of the impact and the rider's head there for the foam to deform on to.

It's just a nonesense, this is why we have official approved measures of testing helmets, and why they aren't tested by a guy with horrible scream child, a random chair and a hammer.

Watch it for entertainment value, because that is all it is.

Two problems:

One, the hammer is going ridiculously fast. People can swing their arms at 100mph. In the video it's probably 40 or 50 but that's still a very fast impact - helmets are designed to protect against lateral impact with the road. If you hit something head on at high speed you are deader than dead due to the deceleration involved.

Secondly, helmets aren't really built to protect against sharp objects like that anyway because few accidents involve that sort of impact.

Throw them at walls and see which one breaks first.

And again I disagree, study up on material properties. Granted, it is a very basic test, but it does show you some very simple property differences within the two helmets.

The potential problems with the test you are not picking up on eg, age of the helmets, conditions, prior wear and stress and so on.

And turn your volume down Thumbs Up

Bicycle helmets are probably a good example. You wouldn't expect one of those to stand up to a rubber mallet, never mind a proper hammer like the one in the video.

But they do a good job of cushioning the blow if your head hits the floor.

Right tool for the job, really.

This of course assumes that the approved methods of testing are actually useful. Which again, depends on your point of view. Wink

I do question the usefulness of the ECE armour test for instance, when a cheese sandwich can pass it. Thumbs Up

Who buys a Chinese helmet when you can pick up a 4/5 star sharp rated helmet for 30quid? A marushin for instance!

Thumbs Up

God I dont want to sound like the guy arguing for the sake of it Laughing. You could apply that logic to anything, what you should do is only evaluate what you can see as anything else is conjecture. You could get a pickaxe and destroy both of those helmets with a single blow. All this simply shows is one helmet appears to have a higher resistance to blunt force impact, repeatedly ill add. That's not to say that just a little bit more wouldn't destroy it but still, it is considerably more resistance (ignoring other considerations like my previous post and more as we just don't have the information).

To put it in a little more instinctive way, if you had* to choose one of those helmets to crash in, which one would you put on your bonce.

*just play along

Kind of a pointless test. It's like putting a load of metal bearings into a blender and claiming the blender is shit because it can't mash them up. Although of course I'd go for the helmet that survived the hammering Laughing

And yes I did just go onto youtube and search for 'helmet - will it blend' Laughing

Which helmet took the most energy out of the impact?

Which transmitted the least energy to the chair?

Can you tell by looking?

The answer is no, just in case you were wondering.

By the standards of that test. If I made a motorcycle helmet out of 1/2" thick mild steel plate, it would be the best one.

What you should take from this video is, try not to fall off your bike (primary protection). Motorcycle helmets are made of a 1/2" thick piece of polystyrene covered in a 1mm piece of plastic. If you are doing road speeds and hit something with your head, you're going to die.

even within particular brands there are cheaper models which score better on the sharps test

for example, the box bx-1 has a 4 star rating, rrp £60. (commonly available for £35-£40)

the box fz-1 has just 2 stars... rrp £129

this "cheap is crap" nonsense is just that, nonsense.

granted if it doesn't fit you it isn't going to be much help. but if theyve stuffed a head shaped thing into the helmets and smashed them into stuff at speed then it's valid on a certain level even if it's not the be all and end all.

*wore a cheapo "lazer" the other day, not sure of it's safety rating, but the fittings felt shite, the visor was notchy and horrible to move up and down... i guess this is the true drawback of a "cheap" helmet.

When my first lid reached the end of it's life I decided to see how long it would take to crack it..... it was a £40 duchinni (bit like this one):
https://www.chinesemotorcyclepartsonline.co.uk/images/largeimages/310200030.jpg

5 point blank air rifle pellets to the visor put 5 neat little dents in it, and on the 5th shot, a tiny little crack appeared.

Then I set about it with a 3lb hammer, then whacking it full force off the concrete slabs in the back garden, using the corner of a step... it still took me 15-20 minutes to get a decent sized dent on the top of it.

So I gave up

That test is only valid if you intend on crashing into a hammer.

Not sure about you guys but I tend not to ride around near hammers and they are not the kind of thing people leave lying around.

Silly test is silly.

There are so many variables in a crash that tests like these only set a basic bench mark and should not be taken as gospel.

IMO the difference between no helmet and a £30 is 10x larger than the different between a £30 helmet and a £300 helmet.

Regardless of the scientific validity of the test, I still wouldn't put that egg shell helmet on my head. There probably would have been the same outcome had he bounced it off the ground.

The shells a moot point really. Its all down to the expanding foam stuff thats under the shell. I'd rather have an eggshell lid with decent protective polystyrene than a thick shell with crap polystyrene. Its that that takes the force of the blow and disperses the energy generated not the shell.
