Sports bikes for <2000 with low insurance rates?

I've had a ZX6R 2003/2004 model since I've been allowed to ride bigger bikes after those 2 years you have to wait and got that in 2010. I had an accident and had to claim but it's left me with no no claims bonus and very little money, especially after I broke my arm and lost my job as a result.

I'm fit and well now but just wondering what my options are? The same ZX6R will be £730 for me to insure now and even worse if I go monthy and I cannot afford that. I've checked the usual GSXR, R6, CBR etc etc, however they're all around the same price to insure, which is mad when it's half the cost of the bike.

I was just wondering if there are any hidden gems out there that may provide some entertainment? So far I only see a GPZ 500 as an option , all the others I've checked I get screwed on the insurance. I've had a GPZ before and I cannot stand the bouncy suspension and the brakes that barely work and the exhaust that rusts after 5 mins in the rain.

Does it have to be a sports bike? My FZ6 costs me 200 a year to insure, I know it's not a sports bike, nor is it quite as quick, but I think most 600 sports bikes will be in the same price range for insurance as your ZX.

I've just always ridden sports bikes and I love just being able to take corners with good lean, especially after watching Twist of the wrist and realizing I'm trying to hang off the bike too much and I look like an idiot doing so lol, it made me so much better.

I just don't want a bike where I sit up right and you cannot get the same lean angles.

Pre-2003 599cc ZX-6R get quite good insurance quotes. Other than that I know I considered a Thundercat, not strictly a sport class and soft, but close enough. SRADs are probably more for you.. but cost more on insurance.

And buy good rubbers for better lean angles

A ZX6R that's a few years older will be cheaper on insurance, look at the G models and J models.

You have done lots of shopping around to find the cheapest insurers?

For me, the cheapest sports bikes to insure are, GSXR 750, zx9r, zx7r....

The 600cc versions are over twice the price.

My Firestorm will be for sale in a few weeks when I get the engine parts put in. It's lots cheaper than 2K (£1K ONO) and it is cheap to insure. Does need a big of cleaning up though. Its a tatty ole beast.

I'd expect most 600's of the same age as your current 03 bike to be similar on insurance.

Seeing as you don't like the GPZ5 and it's not ideal for tall people anyway, then id definitely look at some older 600cc sports bikes. With anything before the late 90's these days, it'd more likely to say CBR on the side if it's a tidy fairly clean bike your after.

Out of newer 600's look at the Triumph TT600, as I always found these a bit cheaper to insure than the CBR/R6/GSXR etc.

The Thundercat is a great shout too, and they made them in the same spec for years so the chance of finding a decent one is more like it is for finding a good CBR600 than the other shorter lived rivals.

Would you even consider a ZZR600 or a Suzuki GSXF600. Either of these are speed wise about as fast as any early-mid 90's 600, and you'd get these bike dirt cheap now even for a really clean looked after one. It's a lot more bike for your money than the GPZ500, but doesn't have the sporty yet simple but still fun appeal of the GPZ that I like them for.

My thundercat cost £113 to insure TPFT in my first year of riding at 27 years old, was half the price of the zx6-r, gsxr 600, r6 etc

I found the tl1000r really cheap to insure.

Nothing wrong with naked bikes though, I had a great time with my hornet, yeah the pegs were a bit low and scraped sometimes but a set of rear sets will sort that. I could certainly say it was easier to push on the road than my zxr is

a CBR600F? Not a super sport, but a sporty bike and i'm going to assume it'll be cheaper than a gsxr, ninja, r6/1 and cbr600rr/fireblade.

Or what about a supermoto, i've heard of a lot of supersport riders turning to supermoto's as they find them more fun.

SV650 Mk1, as it's only group 9 it's dirt cheap to insure. I pay £97 for TPF&T, and seeing as it's a multi bike policy I get my 125 thrown in for free. The 69hp power and delivery might be a bit unexciting compared to your Ninja but for insurance cheapness it's hard to beat.
