So got talking to one of the old boys at work telling him about me getting my license etc. It turns out he used to be a biker and enjoyed restoring classic bikes but since his wife got sick he sort of gave up. Anyways after our chat he had gone home and looked at the back of his license and realised that his bike entitlement had gone!!

Now I'm not quite sure when he passed his test but it was 25+ years ago, and he definatley had a full license, as well as his car license he also had a tractor license which has also gone! He thinks this has happened when he last sent his license away for a change of address. He rang up the license people (DVLA??) who told him that their records didn't go back that far and there was no way of them finding out if he has these entitlements.

It gets more curious.... his father has exactly the same name as him and when he looked through his father's stuff (he's dead) the entitlements had gone onto his father's license! Shocked

So basically I'm asking if anyone knows what he can do? Hes really wanting to get another bike as a little project, and obviously wants to be able to ride it at some point!

Thanks for the help guys.

best thing i can suggest is to take both licenses and counter parts to a dvla office and see if they can sort it out.they must have records when the licenes were updated and can put 2 and 2 together.. Thumbs Up

As good as sidewinder's suggestion is, the DVLA have long been known to cock this up.

A few years ago there was a case in the national media of motorbikers loosing their entitlement (and some gaining a car entitlement that they'd never had) or even lorry drivers loosing theirs.

The DVLA response was simply:

We don't make mistakes

closely followed by "send us the pass slip from when you did your test and we'll update your license"

the pass slip being the bit you send in and the DVLA shreds...

Funnily enough he was wanting to avoid the faff of having to redo the test (and pay for it!) but if it can't be resolved another way he might have to Thinking

This happened to a friend, the whole episode was a disgrace, ended up re taking his bike test and trailer test cost the best part of 1K after time off work etc.

Apparently even taking a photo copy of your licence holds little water, shame if you were to lose your licence just before having to renew it............................

Sorry, I think he's stuffed. Sad

Salient lesson to never, ever send them a license. Always "lose" it.

SO if his father is dead (RIP) he cannot ride a bike or drive a tractor either. So it's a bit of a catch 22. Sad

Prove that he had the license and not his old man?

If he can't do that, why should you, me, anybody or DVLA believe him? It has never affected him for the past 25 years, so maybe now he just wants a license without having to pay.

True, and I'm sure people try that one aswell, but how could he prove it, unless of course he somehow has kept his pass certificates for them? Sounds like he's between a rock and a hard place! Thanks for the replies anyway.

I don't know about him, but I've got all my paperwork from my tests for just this kind of reason. Is he sure he hasn't got it filed away somewhere? Doesn't seem like something anyone would throw away Confused

I have my bike stuff, however, not my car as when I passed the car test you had to send your certificates away to get the license.

when i did my test there was a fella there who'd been a biker for over 20 years, the dvla lost his entitlement, can't remember whether it was from updating to a card licence from paper or change of addy or something and he was having to take the test again.

DVLA are useless tools, they really are

Aye right...

Prolly was too ashamed to admit he aye wanted to ride but never got a licence or more believable he'd failed so many times.. Smile

There would be records somewhere and if you haven't been oot oan a bike for twenty years you really do deserve to be banned form even posting on a bike forum.

A disgraceful situation. Licence and no bike??? WTF?

Shocked

Very Happy

How?

I asked them about their mis-recording of previous "A<=25kW" entitlement on the counterpart as "A2" prior to that exiting as a (different!) category.

They straight up admitted that was confusing and wrong, but that they weren't going to change it. Because we are the DVLA, and even when we're wrong, which we never are, we're right.

I'm not sure how you'd actually go about compelling them to do anything. What would be your grounds for legal action?

The Welsch bastirts must have windows on their freaking office building? Surely.

I knew when I was typing that bit up there that it wouldn't stick. I was relying on the better side of an organisations human nature. Sad

Oh God this doesn't inspire me with confidence. He has sent away both his and his father's license bit says it doesn't look good. Unfortunately he hasn't kept his certificates either. Which brings me nicely on to my next question!
After all this carry on I looked at my pass certificate and saw the examiner has made an error. My middle name is "Alana" n the dozy git has put "Alan!" So should I get it changed, change it myself or just leave it n hope they never fuck up my license!

surely they have it documented somewhere. cant he do a request for all data they have on him? (think data protection act covers them having to abide by this) then somewhere in it all there will be proof of it
