Right,

I'm looking at getting a car, I was almost certain i was going to go for my mum old Fiesta, she was gonna trade it in for a new car and I was going to pay whatever she was offered in trade for it ~£2500 I reckon.

It is an alright car, it's a 1.4 petrol Ghia, I know it has never been abused and has been looked after.

What's tearing me is a 1.6 TDCI Zetec S.

In numbers

Ghia
80bhp
40mpg
£140 tax
~£2500

ZS
90bhp
60mpg
£30 tax
~£3250

In words, the ZS is better looking plus it can be mapped for more power if I felt the need.

The Ghia, I know the history of it is a reliable car, it also 5dr so more practical?

Any other cars I should look at I want a cheap to insure car, something new ish >2004 say.

What do you reckon?

As Nb eloquently put it, I'd also go with the petrol model. Known history counts for a lot but also...

Google "ford 1.6 TDCI dual mass flywheel" and "ford 1.6 TDCI turbo problem" to see if they are common issues.

If there is a DMF in the diesel I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

I liked my rumbly, slow, heavy, old corolla diesel because it was simple, reliable and economical.

Adding complex turbos, common rail injection systems, DMFs etc etc to make diesel cars feel and perform more like their petrol counterparts makes them fragile, costly pieces of shit. I'd rather spend money on fuel than repairs.

If you aint doing too many miles and not wanting to hoof it down the motorway at 90mph, the petrol with the known history is the one to have here.

It will probably easily do 40mpg, 45mpg or more on a long run, and it's cheaper, simpler and easier to look after and service. Older Petrol Festa's are one of the easier and cheapest small hatch's to get parts for.

I'm a bit wary with secondhand Diesels, and if it was something for a project or you wanted to tune it, id go for an older mechanical pumped TD or a Electronically controlled rotary pump, Common rail is a bit scary in £££ when it fucks up, or you use contaminated fuel, put the wrong fuel in etc.

+1

Diesels are for farmers, truckers and train drivers.
