Gale force winds and drizzle were bad enough on Saturday riding to Kettering. The TLR is not much fun in the wet, in fact it’s quite shit but I managed.
I’m going to try and find this roundabout that almost had me off on google maps, as far as I could tell it was quite well hidden until the point where you meet it and there was no signage. Thankfully it was a relatively quiet country road.
I think it was partly the conditions but the rain had subsided and the roads dried a little, still blustery. I have Mrs Killa on the back so I’m being careful on these roads I’m not sure of. All of a sudden I’m faced with a roundabout that’s partially hidden by trees on the left. I try not to freeze, sweep as far right as I can to come in and get low to take the first exit. I’m travelling far too fast and the camber of the road goes downward, towards the roundabout in the centre. As I near the curb I have her cranked over as far as I thought possible and then I saw the gravel. The front wheel slid for a fraction of second, at the same moment I yank the big girl to the right and level up, straight as a die. I’m now heading straight for a bewildered Indian family in a little Ford coming onto the roundabout. He brakes and stops, I slowly but surely apply front and back brake and come to a stop about 6 feet away from the bumper. Annnnnnnd breathe. ____________________ Cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.

I had a similar one last summer - riding as happily as Larry out in the villages just outside Cambridge. I took a left-hander about 30mph and was confronted with a roundabout right after the bend I slowed down as much as possible and hit the curb on the outside. Luckily the curb was high and the bike just ran along it with my legs flailing in the air.
Also, there's a pub called the Green Man near Bassets Pole and about 10 of us were racing on the lane that leads to it when we all hit a very tight right-hander way too fast. The bloke in front of me hit the ditch at the side of the road and went flying up in the air and into the field. I stopped at the edge of the ditch and was watching this bloke do a handstand on his bike about 20 foot in the air. I was so busy watching him that me and bike rolled down into the ditch Four of us came off on that corner and the bloke doing the gymnastics broke his arm. There was a warning sign but it had been enveloped by a tree
On this map, the bend in question is just left of the Green Man. If you follow the road to the left, you can imagine the speed we'd have got to on our two stroke 250s before the bend.

Not a corner.
A9 in the Scottish Highlands on my VFR750, loaded up with luggage on a vanishing-point straight, late for the ferry, road totally empty. Going VERY fast.
View ahead. All systems go:

Half a mile (20 seconds) down the road. Ahh, road narrows, fair enough, nothng coming and I'm on a motorbike:

Is that a humpback bridge? That's a fucking humpback bridge! I'm going FAR too fast to be going over a humpback bridge!

Brakes, brakes, braaaaakes. Okbackonthethrottle. Waaaaaaaahhhhhhh. Shit, front wheels coming down, more throttle. *Insert aeroplane landing effect*

Long duel carriageway just outside bath - tiny slip road into a little village.
Helpful national speed limit sign included, turns out that you have very very little time or space to slow right down for the ridiculously tight bend that at one point puts you nearly 270 degrees around from the carriageway you were just on Gave me quite a scare

Georgemas junction.
That road is as straight as a die for a very long way - and that bridge is steeper than it looks too. |

Not defeated by it but I got scared. I didn't know the road, it was raining and wet and I was going down the hill to make things worse... and way too fast. I admit that I ignored the signs and was surprised it was something more than 90'C bend so yeah.. I had my 'oh shit' moment.

I've been caught out by the very same corner, same direction. Seemed to go on for ever while I was shitting myself after going in way to hot for me. ____________________ 2008 Street Triple R |

This little bastard just after Cossall in Nottingham.
It's on a 60mph road, and just after a nice downhill straight with a slight left hand bend to draw you in.
Anyone who watches "roadcraft Nottingham" on youtube may have seen the road before.
The road surface on the corner is pretty shitty, and often covered in gravel, so hard braking isn't an option. First time round almost took me into the hedge, but luckily i was on a moped, so speed wasn't exactly breathtaking:')

This is a very interesting bend with the camber reversing itself as it goes and a rise throught the bend made worse with it tightening and the obligatory 1m long pot hole on the center line where it fores you into. Rider 2 in front of me went in about 40mph and ended up in the field.

This one always catches me out!

Doesn't look much, but it is all downhill (going from right to left as you look at it), which makes it a touch more hairy. |

First crash, about 60mph at 3am, I didn't even see this corner until I was inches from the grass bank. Ended up going through a fence and into a field. ____________________ Two wheels are all I need. |

Moderate by some examples but this bugger panicked me last week and was unfamiliar.
https://maps.google.com/?ll=52.508007,-0.956139&spn=0.000909,0.002642&t=m&z=19
Heading at it as a left hander way too quickly for my liking. I tucked it over and found I was on course for overshooting into the field. Panicked and went to grab the front brake, I managed to stop myself at slight application and forced it down deeper then I have ever done before, it somehow didnt slide out from under me and I made it within the lines. The car chasing me must have been laughing his ass off seeing me panic like that. ____________________ Honda Varadero >> Triumph Speed Four >> Honda CBR1100xx |

This bastard:
https://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=A4113&sll=52.376647,-2.844536&sspn=0.005102,0.013937&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=A4113,+Knighton,+Powys+SY7+0,+United+Kingdom&ll=52.377269,-2.843657&spn=0.002551,0.009012&t=h&z=18
Slightly downhill, tightens a bit, only a low number of 'Warning: big fuck off corner ahead' signs. Went in to it much too hot, ended up lowsiding it into the conveniently placed gravel over on the other side of the road.

This cheeky little number:
https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&ll=51.812117,-1.640064&spn=0.004451,0.009259&t=m&z=17&layer=c&cbll=51.812194,-1.640081&panoid=C10pLL3sr09XFJ9gJjlMnA&cbp=12,162.12,,0,12.65
1993. I’d been holding up traffic on the A424 from Stow-on-the-Wold to Burford trying to maintain 60mph+ on my little RXS100. I had a line of HGV’s a few feet from my arse so when I got to this downhill section I gave it the beans and was soon tickling the rim of 71mph.
Dark, drizzling. Lots of warning signs. Zero fucks given.
Tried braking for the corner at the last minute. Crap drum brakes failed to scrub off anywhere like the sort of speed I need to get rid of…
https://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd227/serendipity_uk/RXS100/Stow1.jpghttps://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd227/serendipity_uk/RXS100/Stow2.jpghttps://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd227/serendipity_uk/RXS100/Stow3.jpghttps://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd227/serendipity_uk/RXS100/Stow4.jpg
I tried to take the left hand bend as well as I could, but inexperience, too much brakes and fear of lowsiding carried me over to the wrong side of the road, skimmed the hedge and wrestled it back to my side of the road in one piece. Pure luck that there was nothing coming the other way as it was a fairly busy evening on the roads.
Near death experience and classic cause of biker head on. Lesson very much learned...
...until I did it again a few miles away, 17 years later on a FireBlade. Damn lucky that time too. ____________________ 2007 CBF1000 & 2016 CBF1000F - Commuter heaven | 1994 CBR600FR - Awaiting defibrillation |
