PostPosted: 20:27 - 24 Jun 2013    Post subject: Bike Seating position Reply with quote

Hi All,

I have a frustration which I thought I should share and hopefully get some ideas on it.

Basically my SV is not anything crazy or fast but when accelerating it pushes me back and I find myself garbing hard and holding onto the handle which reduces my balance and is very dangerous.

for instance sometimes in the first gear the front comes up ( mini mini wheelie) and because I am trying to stay in my seat I can see the handle wobbling and moving from side to side as I increase my body pressure on them to hold myself .

I have tried holding my body using knees clamping the tank which helps but I will have a very stiff position which makes shifting etc hard .

what do people do when in track and racing, can it be my seat or simply my jean ? ( i do usually wear my normal jean as opposed to proper leather or textile trouser which could be slippery).

thanks

Leathers are less slippy, in textiles I fly around my seat but leathers i can just sit my arse into the seat and sit put.

Why are you riding around in jeans?

If you've moving about that much, squeeze the tank with your knees and keep your arms loose.

Is the balls of your feet firmly on the pegs?
Are you sitting bolt upright or leaning forwards?

I think it must be jean... Tell her to hold onto to pillion grips... Should stop you sliding about!

Only time ive ever had this problem even in jeans was due to getting wd40 on my seat. If you clean your bike with it be more careful. Other than that no other ideas.

Try gently bracing yourself by pressing the balls of your feet onto the 'front' edge of the peg (as in if you were on starting blocks)

Do you slide back on the seat, or does your upper body get thrown back?

Hmm, both of those things happened to me, they're frustrating! The sliding sounds like maybe your jeans or seat are too slippy.

In terms of being thrown back, you could try leaning forwards from the hips so there's more weight on the handlebars? And similar to what Sako said with the feet - point toes downwards a bit so there's always backwards pressure on the pegs. Then you can't slide back either.

I also grip a bit with the knees, and lean forwards into acceleration. Maybe I lean a bit too far forwards, but it keeps me stable enough that I don't need to hold on with my hands.

A mate of mine throws a piece of the non-slip mat over his seat. Good for stopping pillions sliding into you as well. Also good to use if bungie on luggage as it helps and stops straps rubbing on paintwork.

Like this stuff...

You should be able to find some being sold somewhere.

Thumbs Up

I found jeans/textiles make me slide about on the R1, I'd wager the leathers are far better.

Gripping tank with knees is how I kinda deal with it Laughing

I should say the jean were the issue. I used another pair of jean today and all was good but still a bit of slide

i think i am going to get those non-slip liners see how that does improve it

the thing is, i tried to keep ball of my feet on the pegs but that is very uncomfortable and can not change gear etc, i can do that with my right foot(brake ) but foot ball is not directly on the peg . middle of my foot is .

Thanks for the suggestions so far, The problem I have is that I keep my knees really hard on the tank to stop sliding and same with hands which I think they need to be loose .
I guess it comes with more practice and just trying to relax

But you just move your foot back into position between changes.
As for being uncomfortable, you will get used to it, it's just unusual at the moment, but this position will help your bike control.

Have you tried rear set footrests, sounds like there isn't enough support from your legs. Suprising how much you use your lower body riding a bike.

Rearset. Not rear seat.
