engine nearly blew up!!!

my bike was on tick over and i was giving it a bit of throttle about 5000rpm and then all of a sudden the bike revved up on its own really high and didn't stop i pushed the kill switch and turned the key to the off position and the bike carried on revving high so i put it in gear and stalled it and i have not started it since. When the bike was running it was ticking over high not sure why. It also have a k&n on it which i did not fit my mate thinks it needs new top end gasket set he says he thinks there is a air leak would that cause the bike to rev like that? also you can see a slight oil leak from where he thinks there is a air leak. so would stripping the top end and cleaning the carb and putting a new gasket set on solve the problem? thanks people

I could give you advice about your bike, I have seen engines run with no spark to high revs but as you have been rude I think I will decline.

I have seen that happen, normally if the crankcase gets flooded with fuel from a stuck float valve.

Yup and I have seen spark plugs melt and cause ignition ( this was on top fuel Drags running Nitromethane ) take the spark away and the only way the engine can run is by compressive ignition.

As people have said - you need to give more info. Could be dieselling, could be something else. Some bikes run direct off the magneto and need no power from the ignition. The engine is killed by grounding the coil to put out the spark.

One thing's for sure - don't take any more advice from whoever suggested striping down the top-end as a first course of action.
