Hi all. One for the canvas fetishists.

What I need: Light (<4kg), packs up small enough to fit in a top box (< 50cm long) , capable of taking two adults (I'm 6'1, she's about 5'2 or 3 or something) Budget of £100ish. Away for two weeks, summer, france.

What I've found:

Vango Tempest 200 or 300 (2.9 vs 3.5kg, 39x15cm vs 47x16cm pack size). These are probably my favourite, I think the 300 would be the one to go for - much more room inside, small porch. 200 to small?

Coleman Cobra 3. (2.9kg, 49x21cm pack) No porch as such. Fairly generous size wise though. Bulkier pack size. Good Amazon reviews. Bit cheaper.

Lastly, on ebay there is a Karrimor X-Lite 3 man. It's light, 2.5kg. It packs small, 42x17 and it has a porch.

So, as I have very little knowledge of tents, are any of the above obviously better than each other? My previous tent was a Eurohike Kent, which although I like, it's just a bit heavy and a bit big (and falling apart).

Any opinions welcome and appreciated.

Edit - The other one I was looking at was the Karrimor Beta 2. I like the design, it's 3kgs and has two porches, but I'm unsure about the bright blue for wild camping purposes....

I'm well impressed with my Vango Halo 200. Pack size might not quite fit in a pannier at 43x18 but it's good and roomy, plently of sleeping space plus double entrance and a porch either side.

The spirit 200 is awesome with a huge porch and packs very small but a fair bit outside your budget.

Garth,

I just picked up the Tempest 300 from here for £118:

I got my Tempest 300 for 100 quid from fieldandtrek.com last year.

I haven't had any other proper tents so no idea what to compare it to but it's been pretty sound. Fits two easily plus loads of luggage. Lightweight, packs down small, decent porch, all in all, pretty top piece of kit.

I`d be tempted to add a Tarp to the shopping list
https://www.decathlon.co.uk/tarp-hiking-shelter-dark-green-id_2363223.html
This will give you flexibility, giving you both shade from the sun, and a vestibule to sit under if the weather turns bad. So that your not huddled in the tent porch

I went for the Vango Omega 350. Its a little bit bigger and heavier, but it gives more space, and has a massive porch for bike kit, which takes up a huge amount of space when camping!

I've done a couple of trips with it 2 up and I wouldn't want anything smaller to be honest. It wouldn't fit it in a top box, but I just put everything into an Ortleib 109L dry bag and strap it to the rear rack. I get the tent, mats, pillows and sleeping bags in that, leaving the panniers for clothes and cooking stuff.
