I'm planning a trip for me and the mrs to the lake district in afew weeks time.

I've a vango tent and all the camping stuff I'll need, however I don't have any decent mattress as I would have never used one before.

I've seen afew self inflating double ones, what are these like for size and space? I imagine it'll be lumped on top of the tent and bungee'd to the rear rack.

My therm-a-rest has been a fantastic investment. Expensive but 15 years on I'm still using it (doesn't self-inflate so well these days but still warm and comfy).

Self inflating mats are the way to go,

Small and light whilst offering more comfort than a conventional ground matt.

Mine is smaller than my old roll matt.

Not had a pukka therm-a-rest but Ive herd good things,

My Vango imitation is coping well and many of my friends have similar matts

Watch the thickness, mines only around 20mm and its comfortable, few friends had the 50mm with built in pillows, nice but they are bigger than my tent when folded by some considerable margin.

I thought one of these looked pretty good, don't mind spending up to £60 but it has to sort out the two of us, rather than one single mat!

I'am thinking I'll get two singles, as that gives me the option of just bringing one in the future by myself. Depending on the packing size.

Whats the packing size of these things?

+1

Thermarest are definitely worth the money if you intend to use it regularly. Used one throughout my time in the forces. Small, light, comfy, keep you warm.

Seconded. The best £60 I ever spent. First one lasted 6 years before the valve gave out. But the newer ones have a different system, and I'm chuffed to bits. I feel the cold in the house, let alone camping, but these are the bees knees. The best investment I ever made (in camping terms). Mine gets regular use to. Thumbs Up

I find them bulky to pack and heavy. Take almost as much space as a tent. Or a sleeping bag. I will take it only when I know I will camp. I take a tent and sleeping bag for emergencies.

I pack a compressor anyway for my tyres, and have an attachment for the air matress which I inflate off the power take off on the bike.

If you go with a woman, all this luxury stuff becomes a necessity and your bike looks like a third world bus minus the goats and chickens.

I've no idea if you're still looking but Thermarest Prolite Plus Small mattresses as reduced to £39 from £85 in GoOutdoors. I picked up two yesterday for £73. You get additional discount at the till too.
