Just a quick 1, live in a council house... the bike will be kept in the front (fenced) garden, should this be declared to insurance as driveway or private property?

Ianal, but I would say that unless it has a dropped kerb for vehicle access, then it won't be classed as a driveway. If it is just a normal front garden with a person sized front gate, then it is on private property.

Just my opinion Thumbs Up

Tell them it's kept in an old bank vault buried in your back garden, sorted Thumbs Up unless it gets nicked and you decide to claim?

I have my bike on a driveway but told the insurance company it's private property because technically no one should be on the drive without good reason (ie postman, visitors etc), and even then they wouldn't need to hang around the driveway. After explaining this to the insurance company, they agreed it would class as private property.

Not sure about council properties though....

On a 1996 GSF600N? Not worth claiming on, go TPO or whatever's cheapest with the highest excess you can list, say it's in a bank vault and Almax chained to a shark with a frikkin' laser.

I wouldn't make the decision. get on the phone and tell them it's parked in your private garden, gives them no excuse to question it in case of a theft claim.

Then yes, call or better yet email - heck, attach a picture - and say "I've told you the situation, you put it in whatever pigeon-hole you want, chum."

Not sure I'd be "teasing" many people on here when they find out that I've taken a walk down the brown lane and went for a Shadow Black Spirit Razz loved the style and comfort of it since I first seen it over a year ago. Took a standard shadow out for a test and loved it despite the lack of grunt so decided to sign on the dotted line.

So after I throw myself of a bridge at Killiecrankie at lunch time I go pick it up from Edinburgh. Shall be a good day me thinks.

Oh and to clarify, told the dude on the phone it was a fenced garden to which he asked if it was a secure compound or private property. So private property it is.

Just remember it's not always cheaper - I got better quotes for on street parking than I did a garage on multiple occasions.

Seriously?! I'd guess that there's probably been alot of garages broken into near your area but less bikes stolen from the road. Hell someone in my street had their house broken into in the middle of the night 2 weks ago, the only thing they stole was the car keys and subsequently the car.

Yeah, it was odd. Insurance isn't always as clear cut as you'd think. Garages seem to be seen as a place where thieves can get in and go about their business undetected. Or like you suggest a lot of break ins in the area.

The other surprise to me was leaving a £30k Testarossa on the street was cheaper than an old £2k scooby - probably more to do with the likelihood of accident but still £400 for the Ferrari, £1200 for the Subaru. Madness...

The one I don't like is that my excess goes up if my bike is stolen within 500 yards of the house. Means you always think when you park up for ten mins whether you should put it in the garage, which is a pain.

When I tell people I have a bike parked on the street in London they look at me as if I am mad. "How much that cost ya??" etc etc. Actually TPFT on an SDP policy is about £250 a year for a CBF600 ridden by a 30+ bloke - which isn't too horrific I thought. Cheaper than the car which is insured on same terms.

^^^^ If only it was that price for the shadow. If i say it's in a garage it drops the price by around £100, but sod saying that and then trying to prove it if something does happen.

my back garden is a secure compound as the gate locks

The fact that two big blokes could kick the panel fence through doesn't really come into it.
