So the bike is due an MOT and the battery has indeed seen better days. The starter motor drains the battery in about a second, and it just won't start via this method. The bike runs sweet as a nut when it's bump started though.
Is it an MOT requirement for a starter to be used?
I do intend on buying a battery for the bike but it would be handy not to have to do this before the MOT.

In a word, no, but they will need to test the lights, horn etc so your battery will need to power those.

It's all in here https://www.motuk.co.uk/manual/mc_contents.htm

Just to confirm NO.

My lad's bike (Varadero XL125V) has a knacked starter motor that appears to have welded itself into/onto the engine. Passed MOT ok. As said, lights, horn, indicators, etc. work ok on battery power. I believe tester started it ok with bump or may have used rolling road.

So to repeat above in your case you will need to buy a battery so the electrics can be tested.
