Yamaha R6

[Fowlersrs]

A popular brand of bike I know but nothing I've ever considered owning, but I've always looked at em and thought I wonder what they're like to ride.

Are they as rediculously quick as they look or is there more too it owning a Yamaha?

Pro's/Cons?

I had a test-ride on the 2007 model. A revvy fucknut of a bike that would have lasted a summer before blowing its guts out through the muffler.

Had a go on an early carbed one. Was nice and smooth, plenty powerful. Not too aggressive riding position (compared to my GSXR).

Would have one myself.

Depends what you've ridden before / currently to a large extent, but yes they're quite quick as with most of the 600 sports, the newer ones are very nice bikes, as mentioned some of the older early 00's and before ones are prone to problems although not that bad bikes in general.

What year where you interested in specifically

I had an '08 for three and a half years; recently replaced it with a cross-plane R1.

What I liked:

* A very distinct powerband: it started to get serious at about 8,000 RPM and went batshitinsane at 11,000 RPM, only falling off 500 RPM before the red line.
* Surprisingly comfortable to ride (with one exception).
* Decent fuel consumption: I never got less than 47 mpg.

What I didn't like:

* Fierce vibration through the grips that sent my hands numb after 30 - 45 minutes. Never suffered numb hands on any other bike...
* Low speed handling wasn't confidence inspiring, and it had a huge turning circle.
* I got fed up with the high-pitched engine note, because it had to be revved if I wanted any sort of real performance.

The R1 seems very tame in comparison, despite being far more powerful.

How did you find hopping on the r1 from the r6, i've been contemplating upgrading my zx6 for an r1 in the next year or so but i'm not sure if it might be a bit o.t.t in comparison, or even sluggish for the sort of riding i do day to day.

I do a fair bit of bobbing around town and relaxed country winding, i'm rarely one for opening it up to be honest bar the odd quiet carriageway.

Probably shouldn't have a sportsbike to be honest

Suprised about the fuel consumption expected worse to be honest. My zx6 averages similar to the r6. 40-50 depending on how pampered it is

It's got a pretty extreme riding position from what ive been told the handling is very track focused. But the 08 onwards model is the best looking supersports 6 if you ask me,that front end looks mean!

I use my R6 as a daily ride.
It is definitely more at home on fast A roads than it is in heavy city traffic. It's light though, so I have no problem throwing it around at low speeds.
The engine is definitely more happy at higher revs. The rush you get when it hits the power band is fantastic.
Ergos are something you have to get used to. The later models put you in an even more aggressive riding position due to being very track focused.
I too have suffered numb hands and cramped legs.

As with most 600 sport's they need to be kept on the boil to make significant progress on the twisty stuff.

This was the first injection one.

Earlier models were tankslappy...uglier ... less reliable etc.

The latest ones are uncomfortable and mental revvy... no power at all below 10k ..great for track .. crap for road... but look stunning.

My model has good low down pull.. revs a bit if you fancy it (power hitting in at 8k ish is great fun... but best of all its very comfortable to ride.
I went to lemans on it and it was lovely.. and I am an old achey git.

Get the 2003 - 2005 model.
