Price: easily over £10k for a full rookie season in 600s if you haven't got anything. Can do it for a lot less if you for a lower class.
Time: A whole load; one or two weekends a month gone for the actual racing, a lot more time sorting everything else.
Bikes: Anything from 39cc minimoto to a 185 rear wheel horsepower r1
Licence; for 'big bike' racing you need an ACU licence.

If you're looking at 'big bike' road racing (ie not mini moto's etc) I'd suggest you do some track days. At this point you'll probably realise that you are relatively slow for the novice group, never mind the fast group. I can usually run around the middle of the fast group, depending on the other riders in it. My lap times are at the back of rookie 600s.

Some people do go straight into racing, some of these do carry on and do well; most I suspect get disapointed and humiliated and thus disillusioned.

Track days are also a lot cheaper for the track time, so might as well do them until you aren't getting much faster on them.

Shocked

Need to pass that test to get the restricted 600!

I believe certain standards are required for certain track days, but you'll probably be able to find some event to cater for any standard (from a 50 race rep day to a cruiser day... or thereabouts) of riding and bike.

So i think its subjective, down to the event as opposed to a general rule.

They couldnt let 50's on a track with 600 sports, one going 30-40 the other going 130-140.. cause alot of accidents very quickly.
