been gifted an sv650s '99 model with a knackered rear shock. I know a lot of parts from 04-06 fit. Anyone any idea if any other shocks from other years fit?

The 03-06 ZX6r 636 shock is apparently the common mod.

If that is expensive, just get your on recon'd?

Either the ZX6R shock, or a GSXR one. I've got an '05 750* shock on there, and it transforms the bike. It's worth getting one for a sportier bike, purely because they're a bit stiffer, track better, and are adjustable.

Bear in mind that my knowledge only really covers the post '04 SVs.

*The eBay ad was a bit vague - I bought it on the off chance that it'd fit, and it did. I figured that at £40, it was worth a punt.

looking for the cheapest/easiest option. Not looking at improving the sv650s as it will either end up being sold, or used as a cheap commuter. Second hand 03-06 sv650s rear shocks seem to go for considerably less that the 99-02 counterparts + usually have less milage
