Laughing Thought I'd bring this up, when winter does hit, I was thinking rather than wear two thermal base layers I thought maybe use a decent ski jacket underneath my leathers.

Sounds stupid, but last winter I managed two base layers, two jumpers (or sometimes a thin third one under that!), and two shirts, and I was still frickin freezing in my leathers even with all that on.

So anyone been skiing that could recommend a thin-ish ski jacket that might fit under a leather bike jacket? Easier to carry around in a bag rather than shed loads of layers...

Something like this;

have you seen those vests with heating elements that Maplin were selling? would your electrics take the extra drain?

lol heated vests, friend mentioned a similar thing! Not for me, what if you break down and need to shoelace express it home?

I know, it's annoying me too, travel 20 miles to a friends in a jumper/leathers in the day, nice and warm. Go to leave at night and I freeze all the way home. Drops from 17 degrees down to about 8 overnight.

Fook this country.

Just want a tried and tested jacket from a BCF member that's relatively budget (sub £90.)

Why under????

You need it over.

Also sounds like you are packing too much under the leathers. You need looseness in the cloths. So you get a air gap between layers. Which helps to keep you warm.

In that case, being too coldwill be the least of your worries... pushing a bike is very warm work Wink

Leathers aren't really the best thing for winter, as said above you need another jacket over the top - big warm day-glo work jackets are popular as they are cheap, fairly waterproof, and you could do with the extra visibility and reflectives in the dark wet days of winter.

which bit you was cold, the reason i ask it one of the primary use of things like arms, legs, hands and feet is to keep the body cool, if your hands are cold the chances are the rest of you will get cold, along with feet.

also first layer should be a string vest, then lost and lost of thin layers. this will create air pockets which will insultae against the cold.

also if you stop and think for more than a couple of seconds there are items worn by people like divers that keep them warm in cold water. you could also add to the fact that is abrasion resistant too which would add anuther layer of protection if you come off

No more than a T-shirt, heated jacket and coat the whole of last winter.

But you don't want a heated jacket...

Would of thought even a thin jacket UNDER leathers would be annoying to be honest.

I just layer but make sure each is thinner than previous.

Top - thermal long sleeve. Long sleeve shirt. Long sleeve thin jumper and if needed thicker jumper. Then (big help here) baggy hoodie over leathers.

Legs - usually find thermal legging and thickish tracksuit is enough.

Then just take layers on and off all togethed like it was one piece of clothing so doesnt take long. Thumbs Up

Then thermal necklong balaclava. Thermal inner gloves. Think of hawaii - job done

I've had the same heated vest since 1998, it's worn over a thin jumper for normal freezing cold weather and between the t-shirt and thin jumper for extra super bloody freezing weather.

It's like riding to work in front of a roaring log fire. I normally switch it off when I get to London as it's pretty good insulating on it's own for city riding.

The heated jackets actually that good?

Silly, but I rode with no gloves the whole of winter, know the risks and that but the muffs just destroyed the wind chill and my hands were like they are now, warm and fully usable.

Can imagine grabbing a nice heated jacket would solve the cold issues I had on my upper body Thumbs Up

I wear my standard beaten up frank thomas textile jacket and a couple of thin fleeces underneath for the very cold days. It's just enough to keep me warm down to about freezing temperatures.

Also superbly warm hein gericke goretex trousers I got off gumtree for £30, a neck tube and a pair of decent boots (and sometimes heat holders socks). Oh and FURRY MUFFS!

You need to keep your whole body, not just your torso warm.

Well the main parts that get cold are my chest, thighs and hands.

Just wanted a jacket that was as effective as my thermal base layer and two/three jumper setup.

I tried using less layers and I nearly passed out on the duel carriageway back from Eastbourne.

I just have a low tolerance for cold.

Can no one suggest a jacket!? Laughing

I usually wear any textile jacket I can find, hoody under that, another hoody under that and a tshirt and STILL get cold.

I'm waiting for sickpups reply in to heated jackets.. personally, I would prefer one than layering up.

Hands, get some muffs from Tucano Urbano with heated grips. Lowest setting still = toasty as arse. Laughing

But paddy surely rather than a heated one, a jacket designed for zero temperatures would be more effective/cheaper/easier? I've never worn a skiing jacket so can't comment, which is why I need an opinion on people who have.

Also I want something to tuck into a rucksack when I ride before nighttime.

I'm not sure you guys are buying your gear in the correct size if you are fitting two hoodies, two base layers etc underneath it.

I can wear a merino wool layer and a tshirt, that's it. Boxers socks and wool layer on the bottom. I have a textile jacket that has in insert that I can wear a fluffly fleece type thing underneath with a long sleeved tshirt, that's more than adequate. I don't get how you can ride with all those layers, it'd be horrible.

Muffs and heated grips ftw, although I only ever used cowboy acerbis off road ones, but they did an okay job of deflecting the wind.

I bought my jacket that was quite tight! However two winters later and I've managed to make it take a couple of hoodies under it. I can still wear it with just a shirt on, just its a wee bit loose. Prefer it like that tbh.

I can still get kneedown in all those layers. Says a lot. Laughing

I used to ski a lot and I'd say that heated vests are cheaper and warmer than ski gear. Bear in mind 'casual' ski gear is not really designed to keep skiers toasty as skiers are physically working and it really isn't that cold on the slopes. I've been skiing in a T shirt and jeans before. If it gets cold on the slopes, I simply add layers underneath my gear.

For the record, I wear 'Sun Valley' gear which is a really old brand from the S of France because this is where I used to live.

However, when I want uber-warm kit, I go to a mountain climbing store and I also have a bikers heated vest. Note that some heated vests only require a battery and don't charge from the bike. Mine, for example, has a battery in it and is fine for the to-and-from commute to work.

Yes but not the maplin ones, I have the gerbing heated under jacket. Plug into battery and away you go. It was so warm that all I wore was a thin ish hoody. Also have heated gloves from gerbing, life time guarantee on the electrics. Replaced mine 3 years ago, still work now. You basically get given a new one!
