Has anyone got any idea what this could be?

Took my dash off to install gear indicator and Volt meter and found this plug which has a cap on. All wires entering it are green with black stripe. I stripped back some of the tape and it doesn't appear to be spliced into the dash loom (the plug to the left) anywhere nearby, plus a majority of the wires go in the opposite direction. I cant see the same green wires exiting the loom anywhere so assume it must be spliced in somewhere.

Inside the plug all the connections are bridged:

Ah, that makes sense.

What is their reasoning behind a common earth block? I've never seen one before.

Every electrical device has a supply and earth with the negative terminal of the battery earthed directly to the frame - using the bulk of metal in the engine/frame saves a small fortune in copper cable. Where devices aren't close enough to a good chassis connection they need a separate earth wire and sooner than run each back to the frame earth, they join them together in a commoning block and then run a single wire from that to the nearest frame earth point.

If they corrode they can cause a multiplicity of horrible to diagnose problems.

They're usually just taped up into the loom and forgotten about as they are just a test plug when the bike is first built then never to be used again. Blackbird and VFR ones are usually poorly taped to the loom towards the rear of the bike and get corroded causing a lot of problems, easily cured by cutting the plug off and hardwiring it. The blade one looks better positioned but if you ever start having problems i.e. FI light flashing when using indicators brakes etc or cutting out for no reason it could well be the onset of problems with it.
