Hi, I am lost, the more I look at websites, reviews etc the more confused I get.

Basically I have a 1991 CBR1000F and need some tyres.

I don't race about, I like to enjoy the twistys but at sensible speeds, and I use motorways. Rarely ride in the rain unless I get caught out. Bike is stored over winter.

can anyone recommend me a tyre?

Michelin Pilot Road 3 all day long. Thumbs Up

ZRX1100, regularly hooned through the twisties.

This x a million.

See here for a review I did: https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=3599270

Saying that, for what you're asking of a tyre, Diablo Strada's can be had for as little as £140 the pair and they're more than up to the job of road riding.

I was surprised at how resistant to squaring off yet grippy conti road attacks were.

Since you're sticking them on a heavy old speedbarge, they stand a chance of remaining roughly circular in profile after the motorway stuff to make the twisty stuff worthwhile.

I did find they had a much higher profile (more circular in cross section) than the numbers printed on the side would suggest.

BT 023 most of my mileage seems to involve main A roads and motorways. 3k fast miles on a Firestorm, that is renowned for eating rear tyres and they still look like new. Also seem good in the wet but I will admit to trying to avoid riding in the rain Embarassed

Ah, a tires thread. You might as well ask which oil people prefer next...

By the round of it you ride sensible, in warm and dry conditions. Any tyres available now will be light years ahead of the choices it has when new. Go with whatever your local tyre shop has a discount on.

That said, to keep in line with the rest of the comments, I tend to go for whatever kind of Avon tyres fit whatever bike I have. They probably aren't the grippiest, longest wearing, or most technologically advanced, but they just seem to work very well on British roads, particularly when the road surface wouldn't be out of place in Mogadishu.

This man speaks a lot of sense. Of course, 99% of people on BCF will ignore this advice and spend far more than they need to because they've been convinced by others that spending lots of money will make them a better rider.

They're on the 3D version now, a mate rates them on his GSXR750 but when I need new boots it will be more Metzeler's.

The S20's a cracking tyre but you're looking about 5k out of a rear at best Sad

BT023's are fooking scary in the wet. Good for burnouts though...seem to make a lot of smoke very quickly & light up easily.

There was something wrong with your tyres if that is the case, BT023's are my favourite all round tyre, had no issues at all in any weather including trying to make them let go in the wet.

Not been my experience either. Toured Ireland in September last year; roads were very seldom dry. Only real slippage I got was metal grates and mud.

I get about 8k front and back from BT023s; I tend to replace in pairs, when minimum depth gets down to about 1.2mm; but I'll replace the tyre with more life on it too just to stay similarly matched.

I've had good experiences of the Pilot Road 2s, so I can only imagine that the third version is just as good. At the moment, I'm rather liking the Pirelli Diablo Stradas that I've got: they're quick to warm up, seem relatively durable, and grip very well.

Another vote for the BT023s

got nearly 9k from the rear on my blade, haven't changed the front yet since i got the original pair (over 12k now)

something tells me iain is possibly getting confused with what tyres he had.. or had a bad batch/weird pressure or something as the 23s are fantastic in the wet.

damn good in the dry too. had them on trash on the ron haslam race school on a 600RR and they gripped as well as my supercorsa's do on my track bike! (ok nearly as well).. put it this way.. i felt like i could totally trust them and they certainly didnt let me down

Nothing but good things have been said about the Pilot Road 3's.
That said, the BT021's on the GSXR600 seem to be grippy as the tax-man; but I've not had 'em long enough to really point towards longevity.

That said, I've done about a thousand miles in under a month and they still look brand new; so can't be a bad thing.

That's good to hear - I tried the 2D version but when I went to ride I found it was flat.

Just to clarify the Bridgestone situation; BT023's are widely known as good tyres - I've ridden on them, but not bought them - They're decent.

BT021's are horrid. They're horrid in the wet, they wear funny, they're horrid.

Tyres are a very personal thing. I've never tried an Avon I like, so I would never spend £200 buying them when I have other options.

For you though, PR2 or 3's, BT023's / Roadsmart 1 / 2's if you want the latest tyre tech. The main difference seems to be wet grip though... Not really an issue for you?

Contimotions (never tried, can't comment) or Diablo Strada's if you're on a budget. Metzeler Z6's are Diablo Stradas by the way, same tyre, different tread pattern.

Linky linky - £140 for Z6's or Stradas.

You know G will stone you for that.

I've got Avon Storm 11 Ultra's on the Deauville and they are good enough that I am wearing through the exhaust and available from £185 a set at Fat Wanka Racing.

There are no bad tyres these days but there are plenty of bad riders who blame their tyres.
