Not if you are only using a motorcycle for transport. Plenty of people have bikes that are just a cheaper different mode of transport. While the types that will be online chatting rubbish about them are die hard enthusiasts, a fair number of commuters do it just to save a few grand a year, as well as a fair chunk of time a week.

RAF Engineer -> computer nerd -> business -> politics.

He's the chair of the Parliamentary Group for Motorcycling and does quite often spout 12' geysers of common sense.

I clicked on the motorcycling tag in his blog, and it seems he agrees that the current licensing system is stupid and that we want the EU to leave biking alone.

Win.

I am stunned. He appears to be a politician who talks common sense and has his own opinions/views rather than spouting party rhetoric verbatim.

I wish him well and hope he doesn't get tainted by the Westminster mafia. Any clear positive political voice on motorcycling has to be a good thing.

I like his ride to work comments...

The main reason I commute by motorcycle is that it costs less. I spend about £15 on petrol Monday-Wednesday. Tax disc and insurance is relatively inexpensive and, at seven years old, the bike owes me nothing. Compared to driving, parking, the train and the tube, commuting by bike is a bargain. And then, when summer shows its face and I ride away late after voting, it’s a joy…

The problem is we have MPs and Civil servants who are spiteful....

So motorbiking costs less in insurance, tax and parking?

Sane people would say encourage motorbikes.

Civil servants will think, increase the cost of motorbiking considerably so that it costs more or at least equal to that of driving a car. Its the British mentality, like when you get a nice car people will key it.

Or when you get new windows you'll get a brick through them.

It's usually six days a week: four in London and two in Wycombe with Sundays off. The reason for the Monday-Wednesday comment was that I didn't return to Wycombe Monday and Tuesday night because the House voted at 22:00. I lodge privately in London when it's too late to get home. We now sit until 22:00 only on Monday.

And it is a KTM 950 SM with topbox. Plus heated grips and Scottoiler. Replaced a 640.

Welcome to BCF. Glad to see a politician fighting our corner in Westminster against the Euro nonsense!

The part of the costs not accounted for in the graph is equipment (cost of the bike or car) and ongoing maintenance.

The bike/car costs XXX and depreciates by some amount per year. You also need to buy new tyres, get major services, etc.

I commute (probably roughly the same route via the A40) and it is much, much cheaper than the tube on a per-trip basis, but factor in the cost of the bike and up-keep and the overall expense (looked at annually) begins to even out.

I wouldn't give up the bike, mind you, because it is not just cost. Commuting this way saves at least an hour a day that I can spend with my family instead of someone's armpit on the Central Line.

Currently I have 2 choice's for getting 3 miles to work.

I could get a bus, but that means waiting around for one and the journey to work would take 35 mins at the cost of £50 a month

On the CG it takes 6 mins to get to work. The cost on my bike is £40 (all fuel a month not just work) and £15 for insurance, so £55.

Maintenance on a cg is pence so i would say it is about £80 a month to run the CG.

If you then take into the cost of travel time at my hourly rate £6.20:

5 shifts a week, 2 lots of 30 mins extra traveling a day, so 5 hours a week = £31 * 52 = £1,612/12 = £134.33 extra a month.

So when you think about it the time to travel on a bus and the cost it comes too £184.

So that is one way to view your commute.

I dont drive, but I would dread to think the cost of this

Steve Baker MP part of his Maiden Speech:

Quote:
The Bank Charter Act 1844 ended the practice of banks over-issuing notes, but it left them virtually unmolested in their ability to issue deposit currency to be drawn by cheque. That loophole haunts us today. Unlike the situation in respect of any other commodity, in the case of money, price controls do not drive the product off the market. Artificially lowered interest rates increase the demand for credit, and decrease the supply of savings, but the legal privilege granted to banks means that they can meet demand by extending credit that is unbacked by real savings. There is a good argument to say that that causes the boom-and-bust cycle, the misdirection of resources in the capital structure of production, and over-consumption by consumers. That is the biggest problem that we face today.

We could talk about the moral hazard of having a state-backed lender of last resort and state deposit guarantees, and of the socialisation of the cost of failure; I only wish that I had time to touch on the accounting rules on derivatives. Perhaps that is for another day.

Very brave maiden speech .............Bravo Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Push bike. Light exercise, quicker than waiting for the bus and cheap.

Running. Still faster than the bus, unless you go just above walking place. Good exercise. You have a shower at work right.

Walking. Slow boring, takes longer than the bus unless it's running late. Good light exercise.

Wait wut? MP comes on to BCF and everyone is NICE?

Scratch that.

Conservative MP comes on to BCF and everyone is NICE? I must be dreaming surely?

Steve, you're a man after my own heart. Libertarianism and centre right politics. A match made in heaven, and how the UK should be governed. I applaud you sir! Clapping

Would take a good 45 mins to walk i wouldnt jog for shit. But even at 1 hour a day walking or jogging in total for work its £135 in time spent.

not taking into consideration going out on days off etc.
