Hi guys, I'm not very mechanically minding but I've been trying to work out why my battery keeps dying on my sv 650s, I've looked on other forums and I still can't work out whats wrong.

The SV has had a new battery so I don't think that's the problem from the three phase connection out of the alternator its producing about 20 volts idle between the three connections and about 70 to 80 volts at 5k rpm which I believe to be what it should be according to other forums. Then I've plugged in the RR and I'm getting about 1 to 2 dc on the output which obv. isn't right, so I thought I need a new one, bought a slightly larger RR 5 wires still plugged the three phase side in and then tested the DC output again and its about 5DC at idle but it actually drops when I rev the bike. I then tested the stator and It's not earthing (think that's how its said) and now I've just tested the three phase connection between the RR and the alternator and when they are connected up its giving a stupid reading of 10 volts which I just don't understand but when unplugged it's fine, could I have bought a duff RR? got it from bike mechanic who said some guy ordered it but never picked it up. its from a suzuki a larger bike than mine ( can't remember which one) and it looks in good condition.

Sorry for the long post guys, and I hope it all makes sense what I've said, any help would be much appreciated cheers.

It can only really be 3 things, the RR, the windings in the alternator itself or the connectors between the two (inc. earth).

Often electrical things fail under 'load'.

You might have a 2nd dodgy RR, but I suspect you might have a faulty wire. Run new line for the RR -ve

Check your Reg/Rec, I had the same issues on the Thou' turned out the R/R had decided to commit suicide and burnt through a wire just before the plug and melt most of the housing, changed it for one from a 650 as the prices for a new one were re-dick-u-larse, and a used one for a Thou' were like rocking horse shit...
