Hi all, well I have put my faithful old kwaker through a lot of hard work the last month as I am currently touring Australia, since I dropped her a while back she's having intermittent problems with acceleration. She revs right up in low gears no problem, the moment I get up to 160kph she loses all power, so I cleaned the air filter, changed the plugs, drained the carbs, and I have just pulled the fuel pump out and checked that is working and it seems fine. It's got the ram air system so I was wondering whether the excess air pressure at those speeds was causing it but I does not feel like that sort of issue. The moment I roll off the throttle and accelerate again she's fine but just won't go above 8k revs in high gears, pulls like a train up to 160 but not above, but then on other days she will rev just fine. I await any advice, I'm going to pull all the fuel pump connections apart and see if that gets me anywhere. Thanks all

What year?

You said you've looked at the carbs, perhaps a dodgy throttle position sensor?

It's a 95, not sure yet as haven't had a chance to try her on an open road as it involves going down a twisty mountain road and I couldn't be bothered this afternoon, but I think the fuel pump had a dodgy connection. Will take her for a ride in the morning. Too many beers in me to try now!

Ok I went for a ride today and the problem is still there. Just been reading a similar post on the Kawasaki Forum about a zzr600 which is revving up to 13,000 and then wont pull anymore unless you back off the throttle and rev her up again. Someone said on there it may be the jets, although I am pretty sure my bike has an uprated jet kit as she has a lot more grunt at low end than most ZX6R's. Perhaps crap in the jets? Running too rich? Fuel pump is working with no obstructions. Any ideas guys, I am really stuffed on this. She has started doing this in 3rd gear. I went for a ride after I set the suspension up properly and I had two occasions where she lost power, I backed off the throttle and she came back. Although on the bright side she has never handled so well through the corners before!!

Try riding it with the fuel cap unlocked.

Just an idea, you're losing power under high demand so it's either being starved of air or fuel. You've already done the air filter so that leaves fuel. Best guess is either the fuel isn't flowing enough due to a restriction or the space it leaves behind isn't being filled by air.

Did you change the fuel filter? If it went over and stirred up some water or dirt in the bottom of the tank, it might have part-clogged the filter.

Does sound like an electronic limiter. Has the bike just developed this fault or was it like this when u got it?

On the first line of his opening post he says it's started since he dropped the bike.

Not an import, no limiter. She used to pull like a train right up to the top. However I did remember something that may be an issue, the fuel cap hisses when the tank is warm. Could be the tank breather perhaps?

Ok there was a cap on the breather so took that off and just been for a spin. Made no difference, the strange part is she only does this losing power thing at speed in the top 3 gears. In fact it's probably a good thing she won't go too fast due to a $513 speeding fine I got a couple of weeks ago! Still would like my pride and joy working properly.

try cleaning the carbs rather than just draining the bowls, could have dislodged some shit.
I reckon your clearances are probably overdue too, considering all the pops and bangs on the overrun you were getting.

Yep going to do a valves soon, shes 3.6k overdue for them. Ill clean the carbs as I do have a suspicion that some of the jets may be blocked. Hows things in sydney, and hows the new bike?

Well I spent the afternoon in the workshop stripping the carbs pulling all the hoses apart and all the electrics. Carbs were reasonably dirty and the jets were partly blocked. Leaned her out a fraction aswell as she was slightly rich. Went for a quick ride down the road and she feels a lot better! Not sure if the problem is cured yet as haven't been on the the straights but she pulled a lot better upto 130kph before I hit a hairpin and had to slow down. So the test will be tomorrow if she pulls past 140. I feel confident it could be fixed though Smile

the mixture screw won't change the top end power. Chances are all you've done is made it idle like a dog.

Bikes don't just "become rich" on a carbed bike unless something gets worn out like the needles.

How do you know it's rich? Popping on the overrun? or have you actually had it confirmed by emissions/dyno/colortune?
Valve clearances being out would cause the popping, and I wouldn't trust clocks at all to gauge mileage in terms of service intervals.

You're a nice guy, but some of the stuff you type is utter bullshit Wink

pot kettle black? give a fuck

Actually Mat it has improved the idle, reduced the popping and responds a lot better. Read the post the jets were blocked up and now clean=big difference. What the fuck is bullshit about that? Are you here riding the bike, no your not.

you "leaned it out" because you somehow "knew" it was rich Laughing

Yes because I have just ridden 6000kms and you get to know your bike pretty well in that time. She has been running rich since I bought her, changed the plugs and they were very dark. And you can smell how rich she is running in the air if you know what your doing. So get on with your life if you have nothing useful to contribute.
Cheers

It interesting that it would be running reach even with the jets slightly clogged. Be sure not to lean it out too far as that's much less engine friendly.

Any update on whether it's running good yet?

"if I know what I'm doing"? fucking lol, we've got some sensory bike tuner here. "mm, smells like... 1/4 turn and 1 notch up on the needle on cyl 2".

so how DID you lean it out exactly?

I agree with Matt. Pilot adjustment only does idle engine speed which is less than 1/4 throttle opening.

Sorry

What do you use then? Do you write in a little book every time you pass a mile marker?

I meant that bike in particular. ie: probably not the originals or it's been rolled back given the overall look of it.
