Well, if things look bad when you wake up, rest assured they can get worse...
I have 7500 words on three subjects to write before next Thursday. So the last thing I need is to set off home from uni, or rather try to and in fact simply just kick the kickstart clean off... Evil or Very Mad Crying or Very sad
Anyway, I didn't have the right tools with me to do a bodge, and the nearest garages had no kickstarts in. So I got my lady to come fetch me and I'm going back up with a pair of moleys to bodge it home. Oh yeah, and it's £50+ for a replacement kickstart. Pisser Thumbs Down
But, this isn't just a rant. I realised I have no idea how to bump start my bike? How do you do it? Chuck it in second and throw it down a hill?
Thanks in advance Thumbs Up

Put the bike in 2nd gear, run along side it, gather up some speed and quickly let the clutch out...

Cover the front brake "just in case" and make sure you're balanced when running as to not fall over!

A steep hill helps or a mate pushing.

I was bump starting my R6 for about 7 weeks and I'm only little Shocked

If I can bump start an R6 easily then I'm sure you can bump start whatever bike it is you have Thumbs Up

Unless it's some sort of supermoto, they's one bitch of a mofo to bump/start in general Laughing

Small cc strokers can be bumped from standing. As long as you have it in 2nd/3rd just one sharp shove and it should go. Just remember to pul the clutch in sharpish.

Or, the easy way to to find a passer by and get them to push it while you sit on it! Cool

Laughing Yeah always good that one.

I've found that putting the bike in 1st and dumping the cltuch really quickely (whilst rolling) works better for jump starting the bike. It means the bike doesn't have to travel as fast. Works well on my bike. Thumbs Up

Well, thanks all for the advice. On this occasion fortunately I didn't need it as a local breakers did actually have a kick in Very Happy Thumbs Up Wrong colour, but for £14 bargain.
I'm sure I'll need the advice at some point in the future though Very Happy

Maybe I'm either not going fast enough, or am on too rubbish surfaces, but when I try dumping the clutch rather than easing it in slowly, it just locks the back wheel and I'm just sliding the bike along.
Probably just the muddy lane I tend to do it on if I'm feeling extremely bored. I have to be bored to kick it anyway, normally I just use the leccy start. Very Happy

I'm glad mine's an electric start!

Last time I kicked a bike over it was a CR500 and cos it didnt have enough compression it nearly broke my foot in half, not nice.

The best way is to have a push definately. Running and jumping on the bike works, but its not as good. (+ use Second gear) - like has been said, 1st gear usually locks the back wheel.

Make sure the ignitions on! Get up some speed, dump the clutch, and give it some gas. [This is where it helps to have that extra bit of push from a mate]. As it begins to fire pull the clutch back in and keep the revs up. Then your away, but remember to shove it back into first to set off!

The down the hill thing is a dodgy business. Back home we live on the coast and there is a long (mile long) stretch of road down to the beach. One cold morning I promised myself 'it couldn't fail to start with a hill of that size' - but the bast@rd didn't.

It stayed at the beach for three days Rolling Eyes

It isnt too hard on a single/transverse engine that is chain driven, but you should see how hard it is bumping a shaft driven BMW flat twin!! the torque reaction pulls the bike away from you when you let the clutch out!! amusing to watch but i wouldnt like to try it

You should be able to start a 125 2-stroke by sticking it in second then paddling it along with your feet.

They often start 125cc race bikes (no kick start) by sticking them on the padock stand in second gear and pulling the back wheel round by hand (mind fingers!).

Otherwise, as said, get some speed up in second and pop the clutch, on bigger bikes you may need to sit heavily on the seat as you do so to stop the rear wheel sliding.
