After convincing myself to finally get on the PS3 bandwagon (7 years too late?!) - partly as a result of the Last of Us thread on these very forums, I perused fleabay and found one down the road with the yellow light of death fault. I took a gamble as it's a £40 repair and won it for the princely sum of £15. Razz

Got it home to check that it was a YLOD fault and it was. I did the fan test thing and was stunned to find a disc popped out - COD - Black Ops Twisted Evil So, I got a bonus disc - but can't play it....

In my fleabay watch list was another PS3 also in the local vicinity and going quite cheap - again, it was faulty but I'm a bit of tinkerer and this one was listed as faulty blu ray drive. I reckoned I could swap the BD out of the first and get a fully functioning PS3 out of both units.

I got the second one home, powered it on and confirmed that the drive wasn't working. I whizzed the case open, lifted the BD drive up and to my utter disbelief found that the data ribbon was actually disconnected! I reconnected, powered on, put in my free bonus disc from the first PS3 and giggled with glee as COD Black ops began to play. Twisted Evil Twisted Evil To top it off, the PS3 detected the 3D telly, and went into 3D mode - I didn't even know they made 3D games!!!!

So that was my weekend - reawakening my hidden gamer for the hefty sum of £30 for both units and a free game. And I've got a spare PS3 knocking about ready for a YLOD fix and BD drive Smile

Now.... a couple of questions....

1:
HOW THE FVCK do you get used to the thumb-sticks? I made the move from a megadrive in mid-90s to PC gaming on keyboards etc. I don't have the manual dexterity to make fine adjustments on these things and it's driving me absolutely crazy. Can I play using a mouse and keyboard?!

2:
Also, call me a pussy but COD just isn't for me - there's just too much going on and I don't know the difference between an MP5 and an AK47 and don't really give a toss. I'm more of a Mass Effect guy and started playing Mass Effect 2 yesterday and I'm getting on with it quite well (apart from my current thumb-stick issue that is). So I'm on the hunt for slower paced games with gorgeous graphics. Are there any games like the 'Myst' series I used to play on the PC?

3:
Any other recommendations for suitably good games that aren't just fast paced FPS blow the shit out of commies?

Ah the ps3. Good console, i miss mine.

You would like the 'unchartered' games. I played number 2 and it was great!

I've been tempted by the Uncharted series after reading some reviews but wasn't sure I liked the theme - kind of Indiana Jones meets Temple Run with some Tom Raider chucked in (not usually my thing)? I've just checked out some of the vids for it and it looks quite good and same developer as the Last Of Us so should be good Smile I can pick up a copy on fleabay for a tenner so nothing to lose really.

Only a few games support mouse/keyboard input - I think that Unreal Tournament was one of them, but it definitely won't fulfil your desire for a slower game. As for the thumbsticks; you just get used to them. They are weird at first, but start to make sense with practise.

COD and the like are so mentally un-stimulating that I consider them to be the equivalent of a week in an SD tank. The Silent Hill HD re-release is good, as is Fallout 3. I also recommend getting hold of the DLC for Mass Effect2 and 3 - it's worth it.

I wouldn't bank on finding Myst, though. I can't imagine it'd translate too well to consoles. Try something like Limbo, or (flow) if you like pretty games that don't rely on blasting the crap out of things. The Playstation Market has got a lot of good indie games.

Buy some of these, they make a world of difference to the L2 and R2 triggers.

As for the thumbsticks, you just need to practice. Fiddle with the sensitivity. Something else I found helps (but isn't an option in all games) is to enable legacy controls.

Normal controls are left stick to move forward/back and sidestep, right stick looks around.

Legacy controls are left stick to move forward back and turn (not unlike playing Doom), right stock looks up/down and sidesteps.

My gf became ten times better at Halo with Legacy controls.

Don't do it, legacy control are a pain in the arse, that how I used to play. Much better doing it the 'normal' way now.

Agree.

Took me awhile to get used to the thumb sticks when I got a PS3, now I wonder how I ever used the digi pad.

I like the PS3 for;
Racing games
LittleBigPlanet 2
Saints Row 2 & 3
Mass Effect 2 & 3 (Although I didn't have a decent PC when I first played them.)
Army of Two (For COOP fun)

Or Games I can't get for the PC Smile

I know, but you have to start somewhere. I suppose better to start the hard way and just practice...

search ebay for eagle eye 3 or xim edge, programmable box you hook up to your PC, configure keys and then unleash hell on the PS3 with keyboard and mouse

XCOM: Enemy Unknown.

Best RTS style game you will find on PS3, and an absolute hoot to play. Involving, tense, well paced and generally very rewarding.

This. Even better, it's free on PS+ now. Get it immediately.

Otherwise, a lot of my favourites have been mentioned but Deus Ex: Human Revolution (also free on PS+, or about a fiver preowned) and Far Cry 3 are must haves too. I'm not sure if Arkham City is still free on PS+ but if it is, get that too.

Basically, for the cost Playstation Plus is great.

I like the look of XCOM but I think I'd struggle with the controls to be honest. I used to play C&C, Civilisation, Diablo etc (PC) and it's so easy to just select things by click and drag. Aaaaarggh - those bloody thumbsticks!

One game I've just come across is Heavy Rain. It's crime solving type and the graphics are pretty good. The protagonist is an FBI agent with a pretty nifty but far fetched 'evidence locator' in the form of a pair of shades and a special glove but it plays really well and the atmosphere's good.

I also got stuck into the demo of Limbo and I've now got it on order Thumbs Up

MotoGP2013: Thumbs Down wtf is that shit about? Not impressed at all when compared with the likes of Gran Turismo

Anyone else have any verdict on PS+? I'm very tempted to be honest.

Also, nearly run out of space on the internal 40G HDD - can I just plug in an external HDD and use that instead? What happens to DLC if I want to swap the internal HDD? Can it be transferred?

You can back most of your stuff up like game saves etc. but NOT copyrighted stuff. i.e. downloaded games. You have to re download them.

The good thing is you can queue up the downloads. When I re downloaded all my stuff I spent about an hour queuing up everything then left my PS3 on for 2 days lol

If I was you I'd spend £50 and put a 1tb HDD in it. It is a piece of piddle to do and you'd never have to worry about it again. Thumbs Up

PS+ is definitely worth it. Thumbs Up

'Nother quick question bout PS+ then... They give premium titles away for free. Do these titles get added to an archive so they'll always be free or is it a weekly/monthly 'get it while it's available' type of thing. Also, let's say I download a free game from PS+ and then the console goes tits up - will I still be able to download the content for free? Is it like a PS3 version of Steam?

GT5. What the PS3 is made for.

Also SBK Generations... Extremely addictive when doing the online multiplayer against other people.

Oblivion and Skyrim are epic adventures but you need to be unemployed to have the time to play them.

The Uncharted series. Any of them.

Got GT5 prologue to muck about with. Missus no like Wink So I stuck on 'Journey' for her and she's happy with that. Also got her hooked on 'Limbo' too and now she's spending more time on the bloody thing than me!

I'm definitely gonna check out the Uncharted stuff - hoping it'll be a good one to develop my thumbstick skillz before I splash out on 'The Last of Us' (which is what I bought the console for Smile )

I hate to admit it was I was a bit of a WoW freak about 8 years ago. Luckily I did have the time to play then as I worked nights doing IT support for an Australian client - but never again am I gonna get into any MMORPG type stuff! It just sucks the life out of you. Plus, what little sleep I did get, I used to dream I was playing WoW Embarassed

You get to keep them for as long as you have your account.

Also GT5 was a bit pants I thought. I still think GT3 is the best. Thumbs Up

No, not at all. I am a massive fan of the GT series but I was totally underwhelmed by it. The updates went some way to making it better but even so, its not a patch on Forza.

I found with GT5 you have to work at it to get up to the expert and extreme levels before you get the fun fast cars. It is a bit slow at first but then once you get some really fast wheels it becomes much more exciting.
