Had my first proper race at Donington this weekend - travelled over on Thursday night for Friday morning testing. I had two big spins during the tests and ended up in the gravel, but eventually got my lap times down to the 127s.

Then, Saturday was a whole lot of waiting around and 15 mins of qualifying - a shocking 128 was my best lap which put me all the way down in 18th (of 28) to start.

So, Sunday - I got up early, went to Meadowhall, did some shopping and had a leisurely KFC for lunch. Turned up and still waited around for hours - motor racing really does involve a lot of waiting...

Here's the race though:

Very happy with my race performance, and now I have my first signature towards my A class license - only 5 more to go Smile

Cheers! It's difficult to tell as I only have one camera, but some of the running wide moments were to give other cars that tiny bit of breathing room.

For those who cba to watch the whole vid:
first corner - crash
1:44 in the vid was my first ever competitive overtake
5:10 on - two cars overtaken on one corner...

<edit> Here's the onboard from the driver just ahead of me on the grid... the unlucky one who gets punted off at the first corner.

It certainly was. I'd be happier if there was less waiting and more driving, but actually getting to hammer round Donington at 80mph+ (average) and overtake as a complete amateur can't be beaten.

The first corner was interesting, the guy just behind me on the grid scares me a little - he's fast but ragged. He spent the whole of quali overtaking people rather than setting good times... so I expected him to have some kind of incident. The fact that 26 other total beginners were all on their very first corner in their racing 'careers' just adds to that what the hell's gonna happen feeling.

I had a really great getaway - reacted to the lights faster than anyone around me. I thought I was going to make up positions immediately, but for some reason I forgot to change and bounced it off the limiter in first. It was probably for the best though - if I had made up any more ground I would've been along side the accident.

The other thing I need to learn is to be a bit more aggressive on the flags - several times on the yellows I let people pull away from me.

Yeah. And why didn't you win? And why can't you fly? And why haven't you fixed the middle-east yet?

Looks like a lot of fun. Not sure I'll ever try it though. I react badly to discovering I'm bad at something. I prefer to fail in private.

I'm more comfortable in a car... I don't really have that self preservation sensation so booting it on a bike would probably not work out too well.

As evidence: 4 mins in to my first ever run at Donington and I'm in the gravel...

Even though I've found out that I'm not as good as I thought I was there's a few saving graces:
1. It's a bucket load of fun
2. There's other people around me in the championship who are equally not quite as good.
3. I'm getting better.
4. I have the excuse that this is the fastest academy year ever and I'm in the faster group. If I'd been in group 1 I'd've qualified 14th and the top drivers in both groups were lapping within 0.6s of the best of the roadsport group (20 extra bhp and a year's experience). So maybe I'm not quite as not good as I thought I was...

So, after putting these vids on line I spoke with liquid image (makers of the camera). Turns out there's a chance of sponsorship (that's of the advertising by companies variety and not the type bcf hates) Smile

I know a lot of people have rated this as cool so there is some interest...
So, if you'd like to see my next video contain a face shot of me looking terrified or an arty shot of the suspension then please subscribe to my youtube channel to make me look a little bit popular Smile
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1g24uBlmVifqKYSiBqZq_g

And in return I'll stick some bcf logos on there (assuming I'm allowed).

A lot of those slides etc (and that first turn 'incident' in front of you) made me feel a bit queasy - I'm definitely more comfortable on a bike!

Liked and subbed... so you better do something good next time Razz.

Those slides are so enjoyable in the car - a little dash of oppo and away you go. On the bike I've lost the rear end a couple of times and it's terrifying!

Also, I'd much rather get in a first corner incident with a full cage and a fire extinguisher than swimming through gravel...

Yeah, quite! I'm on my 3rd roll of gaffer, and the yellow stuff is tricky to get hold of!

Looks awesome fun Thumbs Up

Not sure if you're interested in some armchair advice from someone scarcily qualified to give it but...

I noticed when the car starts to understeer it looks like you tend to add more steering angle (e.g. the right handers at 5.50, 6.10 and 7.02). You need to open the steering briefly to get the front wheels rolling again but you probably know this in which case I'm being a patronising twat Embarassed

Understeer is not always a bad thing... If the car ends up where you want it to go then you are simply on the edge. Trying to correct would put you off line, it's best to correct by varying the throttle in most track situations. My steering input extends the understeer which in many cases (not all) is what I want.

The advice you give is perfect for the road though - so keep doing what yer doing!

My biggest problem is pushing too hard - I need to lower my entry speed to maximise exit. Hopefully I'll do enough hours on the 'sim' to iron that out by brands on the 4th!

I don't mean correcting for so long as to push you wider, just barely perceptible very quick movements to find that bit more grip without having to lift out of the thottle to bring the nose down. I know in the MX5, other than the big inputs for actual slides, I'm constantly putting in small inputs mid corner which aren't even that obvious apart from when I watch in-car videos in slow mo. Might be different in your car though, a caterham is a very different beast to a 20 year old MX5, the Ma5da racers are very busy on the wheel Laughing

Unfortunately, even tiny corrections do push you wider. I've seen a few styles from onboard vids - the micro correctors and the more lazy drivers like me. Think Button and Hamilton - Hamilton is a micro corrector, Button hardly bothers - he steers in then out. I don't think either style is wrong and neither is faster than the other, just go with what you know I guess... Just remember that under and oversteer is not necessarily a bad thing.

Also, the best way out of it is to not have it in the first place - better control of entry speeds is the way forward and the most important thing on my todo list!

Anyway, the 4od is up - https://www.channel4.com/programmes/motor-sport/4od#3549380

No name check, but as I said earlier - yellow car '69' in group 2.
