I don't know how to find my limit. I feel either sober (after a few) or can't remember the night. Its horrible.

Haha, I'm pretty much incapable of going out and not going on a complete bender, all or nothing!

Depends on the company though. I'm trying to learn this 'moderation' thing.

If you're not happy the way you are, then start taking steps to change.

This'll will power, distracting yourself and removing yourself from certain situations.

So go out with different mates doing non-pub related activities seems like the obvious one in your situation. Thumbs Up

Surely if you are unhappy with your drinking, stop. If you can, then fine. If you cannot, that is when you have a problem.

If you feel like you drink too much, then drink less. Only going to be a problem when you can't control yourself.

I weaned myself slowly off it. From Stella every night to fosters to just drinking very occasionally. Worked for me, also regarding memory loss, this happened to me too every night but stopped when I switched to weaker lager. All the best

Which reminds me...

Bear in mind that you're relying on your friends to accept responsibility for your safety. Keep playing that hand for long enough and eventually they'll get tired of it and you'll wake up sticky and sore.

Just drink a couple and stop, or none at all. It's that simple. Don't make excuses about why it's complicated, because it's really not.

Its part and parcel of the skydive community to put ones faith in others.

After a day of jumping everybody goes to the bar to get totally wrecked. At Tilly where the beer is free, they drinking there is legendary and people drink bottles of wine as if they are stubbies.

At places like Hvar they don't mind you getting wasted during the day and jump.

Not a drinking problem Thumbs Up

More of a 'don't know your limits' problem......

Trust me, waking up in the morning, pouring yourself a nice tall tumbler of captain morgans, and thinking that it absolutely normal........ That is the beginning of a drinking problem.

As said before, don't match your mates. Alternate soft drinks. Avoid shots. Don't drink on an empty stomach.

You'll be alright Thumbs Up

Had exactly this conversation with my wife after she stumbled out of the club I was supposed to be picking her up from. My mate who was out with me bundled her into the back of the car, and off we drove. She had no idea who we were. Stupid and dangerous IMHO.

Words were had the next day, after the puke was cleaned up.....

Google the medical definition of alcoholic. You probably are one.

Thanks for the reply's.

Matching others and yes I think I should rigidly have a soft drink between each alcoholic. I find if I decline a drink (already got one)... peeps buy one anyway, which doesn't help.

What this:

"In general, problem drinking is considered alcoholism when the person continues to drink despite experiencing social or health problems caused by drinking".

Binge drinking is defiantly unhealthy.

If people keep buying you drinks, don't worry, just leave them. You don't have to drink them.

We used to hang around with a lad who always got rat arsed and needed help getting home. We sopped helping him, it took a while but he learnt a lesson.

I had to leave work and go home for a kip LOL

Yes, its the matching others and yes I think I should rigidly have a soft drink between each alcoholic. The glasses of wine were like buckets last night and I find if I decline a drink (already got one)... peeps buy one anyway, which doesn't help.

I don't think I'll ever learn my limit, so have to avoid getting to where it might be.

So you have amnesia and you've had to leave work as a direct result of your drinking ?

I'd say that is going from functional alcoholism (a couple of friends are like this - need to drink, but it doesn't affect their work/lives) to full blown dysfunctional, wet the bed alcoholism.

Fuck going out and only drinking coke, I bet you can't manage that for a week. You need to stay away from the pub altogether. If you can't do that, or you start making excuses for your drinking ('its only one' or 'its a special occasion') you need to get some professional support.

In all honesty I think you know the answer yourself, but are looking for some validation of your drinking on here..

As above, if you're regularly suffering amnesia, and taking time off work.......

Good friend of mine has been in the priory twice, and some of his mates still tell him he isn't a 'proper' alcoholic as he wasn't drinking that much and that he shouldn't worry about it, come on out for a drink.

I'm sure I've posted about this subject before, but it took him a long time to get that help (years to realise he needed it) and it is with some major regret that he looks back at those wasted (literally and figuratively) years.

Your call.

I get what you're saying swampy, but I disagree.

out on the lash 3 times in one week does not an alcoholic make.

hell, I made a career out of getting ringbolted almost every night we were alongside, and I never got to the point where I had a dependency issue (close, granted, but that was after a bottle and a half of rum most nights for about 4 months)

how old are you missEd? that could have some bearing on things.

also, wine? that will get you smashed faster than a lot of things, but there are options - white wine spritzer for example - the shandy of the wine world Thumbs Up

I'm with you on that, I've not been an angel when it comes to having 'heavy' nights too. But taking time off of work, having blackouts etc is not a good sign. Ultimately though, if you need to drink you are an alcoholic. If you don't need to drink you're not.

What I was rather ham fistedly saying was: Give it a rest completely for a few weeks and see how you get on.
