Dunno if any of you know, but I had an accident a couple of months ago and smashed my shoulder up pretty bad. Got a screw holding it together and what have you, but I've still got 2 wires in there holding all the bone in place. I can move my arm fairly freely, cant go above 90° and every now and then I can feel the wires stabbing me in the shoulder as they're trying to work there way out, but other than I have most of the movement in my arm (apart from it being fairly weak).

The question is, I really wanna go out on my bike, I've been sat on it and can move the bars around freely and rode it round the carpark for a moment when I picked it up after I had it checked at a local shop, but do you reckon that'd be enough to be able to ride it properly on the road again? I feel I could ride it, just dunno whether it's worth trying in case I do more damage to either myself or someone else. Is it worth attempting it or shall I just not bother until I'm fully back to strength? Just wondering if anyone's ever been in the same sort of boat before is all.

Cheers

Wait till you get the go ahead. No point wrecking your arm for the rest of your life for half an hour of fun.

True

Just pissing me off that I have a brand new bike sat in my garage gathering dust, and I feel like I could ride it. 'Spose I was just looking for someone to say "yeah do it" to give myself some peace of mind. Think I'll just wait anyway, got my op on the 21st to take the wires out and hopefully that'll alleviate most of the aches I get in it.

Ho hum

Do it. I rode with my wrist still pretty knackered, nothing could have spurred me on through the physiotherapy better. Thumbs Up Take it easy and have fun, a short trip, <10 miles perhaps without being too technical will do you good and get you your fix.

Hmmm

Well, I went back to work today, still signed off til the 21st, but I dont wanna lose my job as I've been off since the 4th of October. Thought it'd be too much (I'm a plumber) but it wasn't actually too bad, had some aches when I got home but nothing more than a usual day of sitting on my arse.

What to do, tis a hard one cos as you say it'll help me get movement back.

Talk to your Doc, whether it's a consultant or your GP.

In some shoulder injuries riding can be good physio, but it will depend on the weight of your bike & the riding position. If these things are going to put too much stress on your injury too soon, then don't do it. If the Doc says OK, then start off small like mchaggis said, and take your time to build up.

* Oh no, my specialist subject again! * Incidentally, are you on a sick note til the 21st? If you are, your employer should not let you through the door. You are not currently covered by his liability insurance.

I talked to my physio about it and while he didn't say yeah get back on it, he didn't say no either merely that "it may be beneficial, it may not". As you say, the only person who can "legally" tell me I can ride again is my Consultant, but he hasn't said a word really when I've asked him.

As for work, I'm still on sick-pay, I've only gone back to show some willing for the job really, last thing I want is to lose my job on top of all the shit that's happened already. Not really doing much to be honest, just what I can but it beats sitting at home all day anyway.

Oh yeah yam, it's a Supermoto (so pretty straight riding position) and it's about 130kg wet.

As far as being legally allowed to ride, I don't remember ever being told that I couldn't. Obviously I didn't submit my licence to be revoked or anything either. I had a little go whilst I still had the pot on, but it was pretty hopeless.

After about a week with the pot off, my strength was still crap, but it was good enough to ride with taking it easy. My physio told me that I probably shouldn't, but I replied that it was a better fun way of doing physiotherapy, and he kind of agreed.

The main thing is just not to a) crash, and b) drop it without someone else to pick it up. After a couple of months I imagine it might feel a bit foreign too, I had trouble going in a straight line for about half an hour as my arm was weak. Embarassed

If you have a low speed spill on the ice, would you be able to save it without f*cking up your arm?

I say wait. It's winter anyway, wait 'til spring, dude Thumbs Up

Well, just got back from a ride Very Happy .

Did 24 miles altogether, mainly just local to me, took a ride up through some lanes and what have you. Anyway, my arm was fine the whole time, had no twinges or anything and found it really easy to support the bike. Was riding pretty slow the majority of the time but I didn't care, was just brilliant to be back out on my bike. I've had my fix now so I'll leave it for a while, still didn't feel totally comfortable being back on it anyway but that little ride will suffice until I get some more physio and have these wires out.

Anyway, thanks for all the comments, appreciated Thumbs Up
