As I am fairly new to biking at this time of year, this new finding of 'road slurry/crud' near my home is weird.

I don't know if anyone else has this near where they live...but around here the roads are incredibly slippy with a brown substance that is neither mud nor oil nor fuel nor..well..anything really Shocked Laughing

I guess it is just road build up due to dampness and no heavy rain, we need a damned good downpour to clear it !

It makes the white road markings particulary treacherous Confused

Got something like that here, covers the bike in a tarry coloured shite abd it gets everywhere.

Also we have a building site near to the A57, a major road near me and some how the sand gets on the road, so when it rains it gets all over my bike! Evil or Very Mad

I know what you mean mate, went out for my first ride in 2 months since my accident, and the roads were covered in crap. Was shitting myself riding about cos no matter where I rode there seemed to be crud. The roads near me are pretty congested so I guess it's just a case of cars/bikes picking up/dropping off crap as they go and spreading it round the roads.

No....
my Fiance and I were talking, and apparently it is like this every year at this time (I had never noticed before, due to me never driving..always an oblivious passenger)

This 'crud' is very weird in consistency too...

I think our town must be very, very dirty.

Mind you, we are near the M6....loads of muck on there !

See the greasy roads thread:

https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=37266

It's all the same stuff, muddy grime laid down upon grime upon grime, not going anywhere because it hasn't rained in ages, and it's too hot to dry out and turn dusty instead. It's as though the bike is being sprayed with dirty engine oil, though it's just really just mud.

It worried me the first time I saw it splattered over my forks, looking for all the world like the symptoms of leaking fork seals. I locked up the rear and slid a good 10 metres going less than 10 mph coming up to a set of lights in town on it. It's a real pain in the arse.

What's more, the weather forecast isn't for any more rain for a while, light showers at the very best. Otherwise it's just going to be murky and icy. Road conditions are just going to get more treacherous.

As this is my first winter driving/ biking, I can't say I've ever noticed or heard of this kind of condition happening in early winter before. Is it always the case, always something to look forward too when it's December? Confused

Up the road from me there has been loads of MUD on the road,
now that's brown trousers time, especially when my tires are not
up to operating temperture.
