If you go into Europe. You have to pay toll's and that money goes to the country to help pay for road's. We should have the same thing here.

Really!? The government already con the shit out of our country by not spending our road tax actually on our roads. Why would this be any different ? Better the devil you know

Only if you use the toll specific bits of road.

A bit like, I dunno, here?

Ok, generally the toll specific bits the money collected goes just to pay for them, but indirectly it generally gets back to the country as a whole.

Plenty of UK vehicles in Spain and France that DO pay road tax for the UK yet hardly touch UK soil.

Also; how much such a scheme cost?
How many tourists would it discourage from coming to the UK?

I suspect it'd end up with the UK losing money altogether.

Do you know what the tolls go on? ROADS - shocker that. Decent smooth empty roads paid for with tolls.

The rest of the roads are paid for by the government (people) without some dodgy road tax like we have.

What a stupid idea for a petition.

Again for emphasis: the ePetitions site is a safety valve that prevents people taking any effective action.

If you care, get onto your MP and MEPs.

I have no idea how your reply has anything to do with the petition.

Lorry's and car's that enter the UK. That are not UK registered. Use our road's for free. When every one in the UK has to pay. If you go to other country's you either have toll road's that you pay to use. Or you have to buy a pass to use that country's road. I'm just asking that we follow other country's in the way of charging non UK vehicle's some kind of charge to use our free road's.

Well fucking boo hoo, us proper British people are paying for our roads but Johnny Foreigner gets to use them without paying and life is not fair.

Germany has essentially the same road tax system as Britain, but they're doing just fine. Right? Everyone still drives around Germany and the country is quite rich isn't it and hey look at that they still have jobs there and everything.

Would you prefer a system - and I'm guessing you would - whereby people pay tolls all the time to use the majority of public roads? Like the system in Italy? You know, where you will* pay about €40 a month in tolls/tax just for your commute?

Read G's post again, I think he's highlighted the most valid reasons to ignore the crap out of your petition.

*You probably will not.

Yep, I drive down through Germany every year and haven't paid any tolls yet. No lighting at night, but other than that, decent enough autobahn.
Austria is bit of a pain, as you have to buy a tag (just like all the Austrian residents), but it's a gateway country between parts of Eastern Europe and industrial Germany, so you get a lot of haulage passing through, same in Slovenia. Both are smallish countries, and the locals have to pay the same as visitors. The UK is not a pass through country for haulage, there is no excessive wear on the roads due to it.
I think what that petitiion is really about is that there are foreigners with their foreign cars in our country. You don't like it. Make them pay foreigner tax.

You're wrong.

As above, a few countries do have the pass system.

But I rode around 7 major countries on the continent and didn't have to buy a pass for any of them.
I did pay for a few toll motorways, just as I have in the UK in the past (bridges and have done M6 toll when work was paying.) Got to remember that they're generally much less population-dense, so need to spend more per mile of motorway per person than in the UK.
Oh and yes, I should have bought a pass for the Swiss motorways and didn't - but got away with it as it was just getting dark and I only had one stretch of motorway to do.

Waiting to hear how much this scheme would cost, as well as the cost to the country in lost revenue?
As surely advocating such a scheme without at least a basic idea of what was going on would be pretty silly?

This is retarded on so many levels, I can't even comprehend how your mind works.

We don't pay "road tax" we pay "emissions tax".

Great idea! I couldn't think of anything I'd like more than to give more of my hard earned cash to the govenment for the privilege of riding on public roads. And knowning what a good bunch of upstanding, truth speaking, uncorrupted men and women MPs are, I'm sure every single penny will get ploughed back into maintaining these roads...fantasic!
