I know this is a bike forum but I thought I'd ask you guys as you're probably knowledgable about this sort of stuff.

How much should I expect to pay to have my rear windows tinted - if I supply the pre-cut sheets myself?

Just trying to save a few quid, I have the set, all legal and everything - just some co pansy near me reckons it's an £80 job.

(That was supposed to say "just some company", but I'll leave it as pansy I think) Laughing

I mentioned a bike mechanic'll take my bike to bits and back again in two hours (£40 p/h), then got a response saying how they have to "clean the windows properly, heat shrink the cuts to fit the concave of the glass" etc.

Basically I'd happily clean my windows myself and shove the sheets in the oven for a few minutes to save a few quid! Is £80 (2 hours) a realistic price, or do you reckon it should be closer to £50 (my thoughts).

Can you do it ?

Nope, therefore it should cost as much as someone who has the skills wants to charge for you to get the benefit of them.. Wink

Yep, that's why I'm asking for what other people may have paid / expect to pay Smile call it research instead of just idly paying whatever anyone asks.

I tried to do this.

I failed.

It's hard to get right Thumbs Up £80 sounds about right, seeing as that's what I'm looking at paying out for fitted shades for my car instead Laughing

shit fitted tints will ruin the look of the car, and it does take a fair bit of "skill" as it there is a knack to getting it right first time, every time

so save a few quid and have a crap job and possibly have to buy another set....

or... talk honestly to the guy, say your more looking to spend £50 and is there anything you can do prep wise to make it easier for him/come in on a quiet day etc

at the end of the day your wanting him to tie himself up for the bulk of an afternoon/morning when he could be doing a £300 full fit with known materials that hes supplied

tbh your lucky he will even think about fitting a kit he knows nothing about, ie the quality of the film and accuracy of the cuts.
sure as owt your gonna blame him if its crap when fitted with gaps or patches

£80 = about 90 minutes labour. 2 hours tops. Depends on how many windows but it doesn't sound like a piss-take to me.

£40 p/h sounds very bloody reasonable to me.

Are we talking three windows, or are there separate quarter lights as well?

Either way, fitting window tinting film is no easy job, especially on a window with a heater element printed on it; as someone else said, it's easy to do badly and it will look totally gash.

If the guy knows what he's doing, cough up and get it done right.

Got my old 5 series tinted all round for about 160 a while back. Sounds about right what you've been quoted.

It's a cunt of a job. And I'd snatch their hand off if they are willing to use your tint/film too. Most companies get used to a specific brand of tint, and will only supply&fit.

I tried to tint the rear screen in my Renault 5 a few years back. I took the glass out, laid it on my bed, followed a guided video, and still bolloxed it right up. So I just took the glass to a tinting shop, who did it for £50 all in for me. (for one window). So £80 for the full rear end doing is very good I think.

DIY Tinted windows will only look good if you painted the car yourself in primer with a fence brush.

Just don't bother, pay the money, get it done by someone who knows what they're doing.

I paid £230 all in for a large 4x4 couple of years ago. Took them a whole morning to do.

Normal pricing for an average size car is £120-£150 for the 3 rear windows if they are supplying the tint

So if your supplying it And the price is £80 it sounds good to me Thumbs Up

Wouldn't do it yourself, it's an absolute pain in the ass job!
