Does anyone on here know the name of that stuff that comes out of your skin when you cut your arm, but it is NOT blood. It is clear a clear liquid but turns yellow/orange and goes hard after a while - you usually find it when you graze yourself.

Don't know if it is the same stuff that is inside a blister or not (because that stuff doesn't go hard).

Any idea what it is?

It comes frozen in bags and looks like vomit when a bag splits in the defroster.

Do NOT confuse it with the sort of serum that ladies put on their hair.

Interesting (or not) fact of the day: The thin orange line between the RBC and the plasma in that pic is called the Buffy layer...

Although it shouldn't be orange Thinking

Platelets do the clotting bit, although they do wander about in plasma..

ITT. Bollocks, .

Plasma is the entire non-cellular part of whole blood. You can only get plasma if you treat whole blood with an anticoagulant as soon as you obtain it then spin it to remove the cells.

Serum is the remaining liquid part of blood which has already clotted. This is what is leaking out of your wound. Serum cannot clot further. The correct term for it would be a "serous transudate".

Neither contains platelets. They are part of the cellular material in plasma and are clotted together in the cellular layer in serum.

The blood sample in the picture above has seperated but has not been spun. The buffy coat is not visible.

This has been a public information message from a vet who handles serum and plasma samples on a daily basis and understands the differewnce between them. I am not a doctor, I am a surgeon.
