TL;DR? - Person crashes without gear. Person hurt. Person has epiphany. Person goes to spread word to others who take same risk deemed acceptable to accident victim prior to accident.

This has been doing the rounds for some time.

Bike gear is like safe sex, it's a good idea to pad up, it's good to be aware of the risks but eventually you're going to need to make an informed, adult decision and go bareback (I'm looking at you Covent Gardens)

Read that story before. Pretty chilling to say the least. She was clearly in a very, very bad way.

Scooting around town on a 50cc/125cc at <35mph, I would say a helmet, and gloves is pretty acceptable, teamed up with jeans and a hoodie, or possibly a bike jacket.
I can reach up to 25/30mph on a bicycle, and I wouldn't think twice about putting my fucking leathers on to ride that.

full motorcycle gear isnt going to prevent you from breaking your wrist, or twisting your arm. Which are the sort of injuries you'd get from a slow speed 'in town' crash.

It's there to stop road rash, and keep your body in one piece when coming off at silly speeds.

I've never really had a problem with people riding sports bikes in shorts and Tshirt, because it makes no difference to me if/when they crash. Even if they crash into ME, in my car / on my bike. The gear they choose to wear makes their bike no more, or no less dangerous to me, in any way.

It just means they'll be in a bit more pain if they've decided to go out and crash while wearing shorts and a vest top.

And why did the rider let her go pillion with no gear on,

Quote:
As we came around to the right and went down the hill, we kept accelerating.

So the rider gave it a fist full, knowing he was carrying her without gear.

I was scared

I don't know about anyone else but I've made it clear to my misses if she's scared give me a little tap on the helmet and I'll slow down/pull over.

one particular youtube video really makes me cringe... its 2 young lads (american) filmed by the car next to them. rider is wearing shirt and shorts, pillion lad just wearing shorts. they see they are being filmed, rider does a wheelie (at speed) and the bike goes up and over. you dont actually see them land but foooooook me i bet it didnt end well.

but theres no cure for dumb and if thats what its gonna take to make people realise motorbike clothing exists for a reason, so be it.

I've become all too aware of life's ironies to care much about this topic any more.

Somewhere out there is a guy who rides dressed in fuck-all and has never been injured.

And somewhere out there was a guy who spent a fortune on and wore the best gear available and still died.

Gear is gear, you can't take it with you when you're dead.

They always talk as if gear is the ultimate miracle cure for this sort of thing. Maybe we should encourage more responsibility instead. It's just that people are often too optimistic about their abilities and have no imagination with which to consider the consequences.

You want to hoon? Sure, go ahead, but accept the risk. And not only that, but realise that there are externalities involved if you fuck up and crash. That hospital bed you end up on could have been used for someone else who needed it through no fault of their own. The healthcare resources, etc, that could have been used for something better but had to be slapped on your selfish, road-rashed arse instead.

I know both these people. Both are very close friends.

I did CPR on the latter for 20 minutes knowing it was pointless.

I still ride a motorcycle.

Gear is over-rated. Your best protection is keeping your wits about you, not what you wear..

That is tragic. Is the former still out and about?

Very sad, it does work both ways mentality wise also i think for everyone who feels indestructible in their shorts and tshirt theres someone who believes and rides like because they have gear no crash will hurt them.

Like you say you are your own best protection overall, nothing can match upto that - only be additional to it.

The description could apply to manyof my friends and to myself on occasion. I have been known to ride with my helmet strapped to the back of the bike. Mainly because "fuck you".

I'm on the red VFR in this photo. About 20 seconds after that picture was taken, I was doing 120mph on a single track road.

The farthest I've gone with lack of gear was riding in a helmet, wifebeater, jeans and boots. Funnily enough the only SMIDSYs I've encountered all took place during those rides, but I avoided them through anticipation (watch the wheels!!!).

Have ridden without gloves twice so far, first was when I lost one of a pair and the second when one glove's lining decided to bunch up in a way that made it inaccessible. The extra feel you get with bare hands was almost enough to make me ditch the gloves entirely..

Funny that I'm being bashed in another thread for mentioning that I encouraged someone they should be wearing gear.....

Personally because of where I work I cannot go to work with an.open wound.
Personally i don't mind wearing my leathers to be honest and I always wear them for my 3 mile 30mph limit commute across town; better than having to walk 3 mile round trip to.the doctors every day for 7 weeks for.redressing on an infected wound whilst of on sick pay (a fraction of full pay; I'm incredibly.lucky to have an employer that pays full money for.the first 6months or.I'd have lost my.house.
Oh and I only.crashed doing 50mph in full textile gear

Re- its fine to where no gear low speed
Its not so much the abrasion protection at.low speed but the armour for an impact. Plenty of bicyclists are maimed every year.

That and a.bicycle doesn't weigh up to.200kg or more when it lands.on you

Also.worth noting 30 mph head on is same force as you hitting a stationary object at 60

To all those who have already seen it, I apologise for the re-post. I haven't been around for awhile, and therefore it's the first time I have seen it. It's also possible given that is the case that there are other people who have not seen it, for whom it might help.

I get the argument about low speed, etc. It always comes down to preference, but as outlined int he story, and other posts on this thread, perhaps this is just a bit of a wake up call for those of us who think we are invincible.

Personal choice and all that. I like to ride with as little gear as possible and tend to just remain vigilant when around other road users. I know the risks, and I fully accept them. It's my life, and my skin and bones. Other people's errors don't influence me on this topic.

I think storys like this do have value. I get the impression that a lot of people that ride without gear don't really understand the damage it can do. They think its a bit of road rash, painful, but it'll heal. They make their choice not knowing that they stand to be cheese gratered to death.

Sure, some people fully understand the risk and do it anyway, and that's up to them, but if 1 person reads that and thinks 'Oh, I didn't realise it could be that bad', even if they still continue to ride without leathers, then its worthwhile.

No, you're getting bashed in that thread because you called some guy a wanker for daring to exercise a choice, which happens to be different to yours.
