Hey all,

Just bought a Yamaha YZF-R125 50th Anniversary, has anyone had any experience riding this bike? Any advice?

It's my first proper bike, I'm stuck on a Yamaha CS50 Jog RR until March Sad

Don't pick the bike up until March but does anybody have any advice about riding in general on a 125? Any do's and dont's?

Best advice I can give you:

It's fashionable here to give a lot of stick to people who buy this bike. Ignore the nay-sayers and enjoy riding it!

My mate owns the same bike, You should get a nice book with your bike has a free gift, Looks big for a 125 and only trouble he has had with it is a squeaky brake. Top speed he says is 80 mph I say about 75 on GPS

Yeah, seems weird but I'll pay a bit each month instead of paying it all in one hit. Makes it easier considering next year I'll need to start looking into a car aswell :/

Next year you will probably want something completely different or to do your test or whatever. Pretty shit idea IMO

But that being said have fun when you get it, enjoy it for what it is don't think about tuning it like most people ask about as its a waste of time

Where is the bike while you are saving up? Could you not get finance and get it now rather than waiting?

Can't do anything until next year anyway, I'm only 16 - so pick the bike up on my 17th. Again, will probably stay with the 125 until I can get onto something bigger. Want to also get more experience on the road before I go onto a bigger bike.

The bike is at the dealer and I suppose they'll get a new one sent in a bit nearer the time

Not necessarily a deposit no, I've dealt with the dealer before. Just paid off the first £400 of the bike, will go up next month and pay another £400 off, will all be paid off by March ready for collection

Id be a bit wary of doing that..what if the dealer goes out of business next february ? You lose over 3 grand. Im not sure I understand what benefit youre getting by paying him £400 a month for 8 months rather than saving it in a bank seeing as he wont be ordering it in till next year?

Either way im sure you know what you are doing....hope it works out for you. Nice little bike to start out on that. Thumbs Up

I imagine it has the limited edition and streamlined decals that make it go really really really fast.

Nice bikes though, i used to have an 08 for a year or so, as someone mentioned don't bother trying to tune them up etc they're plenty smooth enough for a 125 already you'll only cripple the poor thing. I wouldn't bother wasting money on exhausts and what-not either you'll probably want to upgrade in a couple of years.

Can get a tail tidy and tinted screen for about 25-50 quid all up only mods i bothered with on mine.

If you're getting it new make sure you run it in as the manual indicates also - don't go hammering it away from its first mile on the clock Thumbs Down

Yeah, I'll be looking after this one. I think I'll try and get my A1 licence to avoid retaking my CBT, and then wait until I'm 21 and then try and get my full licence. Will probably get some more experience on a geared bike before I go for my A1 though.

Got a few days of training booked for when I pick it up. Don't want to hop straight off a twist'n'go and hop straight on a geared bike, probably not wise.

Okay, back to the original question about tips and advice.

Do at least the first few hours of the training on the schools bike, don't risk dropping your own.

Don't get over confident, even a 125 will happily chuck you off without warning if you push your luck infront of your experience.

Learn how to maintain it and do the proper checks on a weekly basis.

Run it in by the book, that'll make a big difference to performance and reliability.

A lot of this story doesnt stack up.

Firstly id be amazed if any dealer would take money for 8 months without a purchase being made and secondly, I doubt any riding school would take bookings for next march either.

Oh, I can totally believe a dealer telling a 16 year old that just this once mind, he'll do him a solid favour and pocket his paper round money in return for a promise of a bike. And because he's got an honest face, he won't even ask him to sign a contract or anything.
