Hi,

Probably a stupid question, but I'm starting to get real comfortable on my bike and some of the routes around here in Norway. I've managed to get my chicken strips down to about 10mm on the back tire. When I push it a little farther and finally get to the edge, how much farther can I go? Is there some indication I should look out for?

Would prefer not to learn by experience and wash out into a guard rail at 150kph.

Antony.

I too have about 5mm on my back tyre. I'm grounding out pegs as it is. I don't think it's possible to rid them completely on this bike with these types of tyres. Don't stress over chicken strips just focus on your ride. Thumbs Up

If your bike isn't particularly sporty - and a lot of entry-level bikes are street bikes in sport dress - rearsets are needed to use more of the tyre. But most rearsets aren't hinged, so there's little warning between touching pegs and lowsiding.

If you're touching the pegs off the ground, you're going slightly too far - not leaving allowances for undulations in the road surface or room to regain grip should you slip for a bit. Leaning off the bike more can let you corner with the same speed but less bike lean. And won't help with chicken strips.

Don't worry - they'll come off with experience and how willing you are at pushing it.

No, you'll be off the edge of the tyre.

The indication will be the ground having a grinding sensation on your arse and other appendages.

It depends on a lot of factors.
If you're not at the limit of traction, it's quite possible you can lean the bike to the point some of what would have been the contact patch is now off the edge of the tyre.

While, if you're hanging off decently, it's also quite possible/likely to run out of traction with chicken strips left.

As you get near the edge of traction on the rear, you may find the steering twitch a little bit.
Push it further, and you'll get what are noticeable little slides.
The above two are 'self correcting' slides; as the bike comes around it, it's now at a less extreme cornering position, so regains tractions.
Further still and you're on your back side, or flying up in the air if you manage to high side (tip - don't close the throttle suddenly.)

It's less likely but not impossible to have the front go - I and several others had the front go under power at Lydden hill, thanks to the knackered surface.
Usually you only expect the front to go under heavy braking mid-corner, which is best avoided on the road whatever.

If you really have to scrub your tyres to the very edge for some strange reason, just let them down to a few PSI and go for a couple of laps of the block. Now you can brag about your cornering skillz without having to actually have them Smile

To 'roughen the surface because they're new and slippery'?

A helpful comment! Thanks for that. This is one of the main reasons I still need to head to the track. How do you know you're pushing the limit of you've never hit it....

I managed to get the R1 down to pretty much nothing on the rear and a few mm on each side at the front when I went to spain, think it is mainly down to the immense amount of corners.

Wouldn't be able to ride like that in this country, definitely try some track Thumbs Up

I sometimes have no chicken strips at all after a fast ride but then after a weeks of touring 5mm ones mysteriously reappear.

I don't ride it like I stole it every time I ride it, so if you're a normal competent road rider you will always have some strips. Don't worry about it.

I don't think I've ever heard of anyone crashing by going off of the edge of the tyre... mostly it's lowsiding because of overloading the front, or highsiding because of losing the rear and then it gripping again.

I'd say I've seen the rear lose traction and low side plenty of times. If the rider's not hanging off/not hanging off very well then part of the loss of traction may be related to the then reduced contact patch at high lean angles.

I first experienced what I was describing on a quiet roundabout.
I'm glad I did, because it was at fairly slow speed with no other distractions. Not so pleased I ignored all the warning sings which with hindsight were really obvious, before I crashed.

It meant I was happy to push a bike with knackered tyres to the limit on my first trackday. Despite the knackered tyres, I was still happily passing a lot of people at once (it is the novice group) with the tyres on the limit of traction.
