Yesterday I quickly called in at the petrol station for fuel, I was in the works van, filled up then realised that I had put petrol in the diesel van. Bugger, anyway got it sorted and refilled with diesel.

Then it got me thinking........ painful I know. How on earth did I make the mistake?

Then I was looking at the pumps. In them there olde days you used to have 2* 3* 4* petrol and Diesel. The petrol was always green or yellow and the diesel was black or red.

Then they did away with the * and just had unleaded and diesel. Unleaded was green/yellow diesel was/black/red.

Now at Shell garages Red is premium unleaded, Green is still unleaded and diesel is green with a small black stripe next to it.

I had gone to a pump with two nozzles on it one green and one red, so in my haste I took the green as unleaded and the red as diesel and put the red in, hence my fuck up.

Why only have unleaded at a pump with two nozzles? And why fuck around with the colours of the pumps? I wouldn't mind but the petrol station owner had a hot line to the Fuel fixers who pumped out the fuel and said that it happens quite often.

If it happens often, then surely there is an issue with the labelling of the fuel.

Ultimately it is my fault, but Shell do need to take some of the blame for crap colouring of their premium fuel.

Rant over.

Usually, but when colours are used and you are in a rush and there are two options, one would expect the options would be diesel or unleaded and not expensive unleaded or very expensive unleaded.

I know it is my fault but Shell should take some of the blame for messing about with the pumps.

Petrol nozzles were red pre-unleaded and green post. I've never known yellow for petrol or red for diesel. Diesel has always been black or yellow and petrol red or green. That's just from memory though.

It's always worth double-checking the words. At least you realised before things were beyond the point of no return. The smell usually helps.

If you were in a rush, reading the pumps to make sure you fill up with the correct fuel would be the fastest route rather than having to take it out and put the correct fuel in after wasting valuable time Wink

The pump labeling used to be less about marketing and more about ensuring the user knew what he was buying.

I only use Shell "Optimax V-spec Super Nitro Turbo Happy Fun Power Time Fuel" or whatever they call it now in my MX5 and I know where you're coming from Skudd.

Can't think what the colours all are off the top of my head but I always think that they are too similar Thumbs Up You do have to actually read them whereas in other petrol stations you can pretty much grab the familiar colour.

I think BP got their wrist slapped for this 4 or 5 years ago. From memory, their super unleaded was greenish blue, and their super diesel was blueish green.

I think the problem is more with the V-Power petrol and V-Power diesel pumps looking quite similar. The normal ones are ok.

It wouldn't be done with drugs in a hospital, people would be dying in droves. Ditto electrickery. Green vs green+black stripe is utterly needless fuckwittery.

Everybody you meet and tell this story to will say you "shoulda gone to Specsavers! ... and read the label".

BUT

... if you don't send a complaint to the Department of Picking Wanky Colours for their Pumps at Shell Megacorp Inc (or whatever its called) - no matter how petty your complaint sounds - then they won't think there is anything wrong with their snazzy colour scheme.

It was probably devised by a gerbil in a suit anyway, so make your complaint loud and clear.

Doesn't have to be smart, wordy, ironic or any of those other things that people like to do when writing 3-page complaint letters. In fact, when you write letters like that, people just roll their eyes and go "Another nutter".

(or conversely people write letters that they think will be considered so amusing / incensed / insulting / outraged of W8 type of thing that "Someone Surely Will Listen..." )

Just make a statement of your belief in the inappropriate nature of the colour scheme, and your disappointment in the inconvenience it caused you.

If everybody did it ... they might actually pay attention.

But when working with electricity, they expect you to pay attention to what you're doing.

A bit like when operating a motor vehicle.

Hi

You have my sympathy Skudd. Screwing with the colourings like this does confuse things. Many years ago Texaco seemed to go through a phase of using green for diesel to confuse people.

All the best

And blue for Biodiesel (at Morrison's) and was it yellow for E-85?

Dunno, I've seen at least one instance where an a sparky has wired old blue to new blue (which is L3-N) and blown up lots of things, including my lighting rig on an outdoor stage.
