L98 auto; avoids the dreaded Optispark and it's had a few sensible mods, so it's up to about 300bhp/400 lb ft, which is enough for burbling about.

Thanks guys.

I did look at a few and there's a lot of junk out there, but the clincher was that everything works, including the A/C, which is very rare for an older Yank.

You're more than welcome to wander up Robby.

Gotta be honest, this was very much second choice behind a C3, but I had to concede that they aren't really practical as a daily driver, plus prices for decent ones are at the next level, which is more than I wanted to spend.

Having said that, the more I look at this, the more I like it and the driving experience (if you like Yanks and the drawbacks that go with them) is fabulous; it's a very long time since I last went out for a drive, just because I fancied it, but I did today Very Happy

I'll do some engine shots tomorrow, although the TPI isn't the most impressive thing to look at.

It sounds farking epic and, let's be honest, that's one of the major draws of cars like this.

Make no mistake, these lumpy V8s give some seriously respectable performance, but it's really about cruising around with the offbeat burble soundtrack, not screaming along like your hair's on fire.

I just love the way the whole front clip lifts and exposes the suspension and wheels. The motor can be made pretty relatively inexpensively Razz

The C3 is lovely, my Dad's makes me weak at the knees, but once the smog gear is sorted and a few tweaks are made the C4 is a genuinely quick performance car and almost certainly a superior drive. Lest we forget the ZR1 (admittedly a radically different car, but built on the same platform) edition of this model set three open-class world speed records for both speed and endurance: 5000 kilometers at an average speed of 175.710 mph; 5000 miles at an average of 173.791 mph; and 4,221.256 miles at 175.885 mph. Stood for quite a few years too. Laughing

Bearing in mind this is probably the first car that the Yanks designed to be taken semi seriously by the rest of the world, I think it drives well, ie like an American car.

IMHO the newer American cars get, the more they try and emulate European competition and something gets lost in translation; I want my Yanks to be a bit unruly and brash, not sanitised, so the only trans atlantic thing left is the iffy build quality.

They were actively trying to make this Corvette handle, so they have uncharacteristically stiff suspension and it gets a bit crashy over deep potholes and does that weird sideways shimmy that all Yanks do, but it's actually very smooth on a half decent surface.

Once it's warmed up (a change of oil and filter will improve things) the gearbox is great, almost imperceptable changes and kicks down as quick as you like.

Steering is a bit dead, not over assisted and it goes where you point it, just not much in the way of feedback.

Nothing to say about the brakes, so I guess they must be as good as anything else.

Engine is obviously the highlight; instant throttle response from the injection and enough feel through the pedal so it doesn't catch you out, but it's a wall of torque from not much more than tickover and there's no traction control, so you have to treat it with a bit of respect.

Where it really differs from Euro cars is the interior, specifically the fixtures and fittings; the plastic looks really cheap and nasty(although it can't be that bad, it's all still in one piece) and the switch gear is an ergonomic nightmare, virtually nothing is where you expect it to be.

A couple of examples; in the centre console, there's a square indentation with some plastic tags evenly spaced around the edges, which I took to be some sort of box holder (burgers or fries maybe Laughing ) but turned out to be the switches for the electric seats and mirrors Shocked

And where with most cars you would expect the windscreen wipers to be on a stalk, or maybe a rocker on the dash, the switch on this is a linear slider, mounted almost vertically on the driver's door armrest.

Typically, the equipment levels are very good, much better than an equivalent Euro car of the period and even better than most Jap stuff, keeping in mind this is an almost stock base car.

So tl:dr, loads of fun, all the toys, but comedy interior.

That engine bay looks reasonably accessable. I like that.
Much more so than my mates Cerbera, for which a surprising number of jobs start with the phrase 'once you've got the engine out it's pretty straight forward....'

TVRs aren't generally that bad to work on, but you do get the impression that they were designed so the major componants only just fit into their designated space, then the minor stuff was crammed into any hole available.

Definitely has potential, looks nice and straight under there, not too much chopped out by idiots. So many yanks around this age have stuff hacked out from under the hood it's ridiculous.

Bit of a spruce up, set of nice rocker covers, polished inlet housing and a smattering of other bits and pieces (alternator bracket is prominent... Wink ) and it'll really look the part.

Maybe a bit of inspiration... This is my favourite ever C4 Vette.

really worth having a look through the pages, seriously trick build. The motor... Page 4 needs to be seen.

There's lot of time and money gone into that red car, nice thing Thumbs Up

Other than driving it, not really.

It needs some detailing and a few tweaks, but nothing major, which is why I bought it.

Plus I find I'm more into restoration than modification these days, probably something to do with getting old!

This is probably a silly question but having never driven an automatic, I was wondering what happens when you spin up the back wheels? Does it upshift as the revs rise?

It will if you do it accidentally, like you give it too much in the wet, because your natural reaction will be to back off, so the box will change up.

If you mean it, you bury your right foot and it will hang on to the low gear; it will change up eventually, but this would probably keep spinning through second and maybe a bit in third, if you're really going for it.

Of course, if you really want to wreck your tyres, you can use the hold positions.
