PostPosted: 11:58 - 23 Jul 2013    Post subject: Is Data Tool alarm draining my battery? Reply with quote

Still having problems starting my 2year old Bandit1250GT and was wondering if its the alarm which is causing my sluggish starting.
The battery was completely flat recently and i called out breakdown to tow me home. Bought new battery but still having problems starting.
Anybody else experienced this?
Any advice would help.
Cheers

The first thing to check is that the charging circuit is working correctly. You'll need a multimeter for this. Measure the voltage at the battery terminals with everything off and you should see around 12-12.5v. Now start the engine and measure the voltage with the revs up to 4-5k. You should see around 14v. If it's much less or much higher then you may well have a reg/rec fault.

Multimeter first, okay.
Cheers for that

In direct answer to your question, the alarm will be draining the battery. If you're not using the bike regularly then this may well result in a voltage drop.

Having said that, if you're using your bike regularly and the first battery has gone dead and the second battery's voltage is below normal, then it's likely as suggested it's not charging correctly.

If you connect your new multi-meter inline on the +12v (ie, between battery +ve terminal and the red lead normally on it) it will show the current the alarm is pulling.

Should be a consumption figure in the manual - although I doubt if it is the alarm itself - as said more like the batt isn't being charged.

I have heard of the instrument cluster putting a draw on the battery when parked up. It does have a permanent live to it so it could be a possibility.
Otherwise, the alarm could be drawing above it's standby current.

yes I have experienced this and it was the starter motor, it's a common-ish problem with this model, battery acted like it was flat and engine turned over slowly

Maybe, IME Datatool's tend to be pretty good if fitted correctly.

IME check it's charging first, then check your battery is holding charge. If both of these are spot on, then investigate your alarm.

Disconnect battery earth, connect via multimeter while measuring mA and you will know whether theres an issue with something draining the battery while parked.

If it's excessive then disconnect things 1 at a time, clocks etc to see which item it is.

Though, it is also likely to be a charging issue, especially if it's going flat soon after riding.

Unfortunately mate, you were right.
Just had bike checked by Susuki and starter motor has had it.
The magnets are shaking around inside and its only done 5,500 miles.
The worst bit is it costs £409 for a new one...gulp.
I am now waiting to see if Susuki will replace it as a goodwill gesture as its only 5 months out of warranty

sorry about that, if the answer is no don't give up there, time for a stinking letter to suzuki GB, fit for the purpose etc etc

I've never owned a 1250GT, but I knew about the starter problems!
