I've just bought one! Delivery expectation of 2014...

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/ubuntu-edge?c=home

Ubuntu desktop PC and phone in one device. Looks interesting.

(in case anyone thinks this is advertising/spam... I have nothing to do with canonical other than being an interested consumer and I thought others would be interested too).

It's pretty and made by Canonical*...

<edit> Also, how is the SGS2 really any different to the Motorola Atrix? It's all about evolution of tech. I can guarantee this phone will be better in almost every measurable way than the SGS2, purely because it's going to be released in 2014...

Call me stupid but, why would you have linux instead of android that has tons of apps and games? Thinking

Fastest multi-core processor
4GB of RAM
128GB of storage
_____________________________________________________
too expensive for about 70% of people, 20% of people who don't care and maybe 10% of people rich enough that'll give it a try, but they will find out soon, that android was easier to have fun with...

EDIT: $32,000,000? Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

Mainly for the convergent device possibilities. I think that's the next step in the market - One processing device with multiple displays and the majority of your storage. The likes of Apple and MS will not want to impact their other business by converging, Android is not ready to act as a full PC so linux is the first step.

Apps and games aren't a big issue - porting to linux is relatively simple and I expect it will run many desktop apps. WP only has a small percentage of the number of apps of apple & android... it doesn't matter though - they have nearly all of the big ones and some exclusives that are very useful if you use it as a work phone.

Too expensive? Most high end handsets are in the $600-$830 range and they seem to be doing rather well. Sure, it's not to everyone's budget, but it certainly has a market.

And yes, $32mil funding. If it were some startup that would raise an eyebrow or two, but it's not... it's Canonical ('makers' of Ubuntu) branching out based on customer demand. They've made 10% of their funding in the first day and still have 30 days to go... They'll likely manage it.

No.

I'm not against the idea, but Ubuntu and Canonical have a proved time and time again to have a product that's almost there, but not quite.

Sure, *I* will be able to use it, but probably only after a fiddle. And geeking about with my phone is the last thing I want to have to do when I need it to call a breakdown company, or a hospital etc.

I'll wait the first iteration out and might look at it when all the testers / loonies with too much money / first generation users have ironed out the bugs. For they will be big and manifold.

If I was well off, I would pre order but I am going to wait. It seems like a really cool idea but I feel like the 1st version is going to need tweaking.

Looks good though. Thumbs Up

I know what you mean, I've had the same issues.

Then again, who doesn't?
Apple - closed shop and hand holding (iOS and OSX)
MS - bloated and now trying hard to be a closed shop
Android - for the fiddlers... I've lost count of the amount of hours I've spent helping friends do simple things. 2hrs the other morning just to get a calendar exported from an old version of android.

I absolutely expect this phone to be full of bugs! Key is though it comes with android initially and then you can install Ubuntu after 'some time'.

One of the major reasons I wanted the phone was to get a head start on development - I'll be able to get some (tested) apps out before the curve if I have time. We'll see...

Because you want to use Linux and don't want to send all your information via Google.

Wait till you've had it for 6 months and Shuttleworth decides to move the buttons to the back of the phone, the USB port to the middle of the screen and the camera to Basingstoke.

But then go and set Google as your browser home page.

I only use linux to play old games, the ubuntu can handle my HW and with wine I can emulate the windows I need, brilliant, I just played SportscarGT, Submarine titans and so on. I've never got any of those old games to run on Vista 64bit.
So, for that, I like linux, but all I do is I use it to run old windows apps/games. Smile

EDIT: Here's an business idea for you, make some sort of home system that would play any old game out there for reasonable money and some retro controllers with MSDOS support, I think there are a lot of people who'd pay you, I would. Thumbs Up

I tried win98, but, there are no drivers for my HW and I won't be playing games in software mode, I never had to and I won't! Laughing

Speak for yourself!

To be honest, I don't have that bigger mistrust in Google and I have a Nokia Lumia 800 so most of my phone information goes via Microsoft. I then use an Apple Mac as my main computer and browse the web with Safari.

Big profit companies do what they are designed to do, make money. They'll use everything you give them to help them make money for little good. Some may work to open source projects if it makes business sense for them, i.e. helps them make money.

Bah I've gone all leftie and anti-corporate in my twenties!
