Hi All,

I want to get leather jacket so can do track days as most places need full leather before letting you in .

I have had a look at what to buy and so far understand that leather jacket should have back, shoulder and elbow ce approved protectors

For trouser it should have knee and hips ce protector

next they should be removable but i am not sure about what the thickness should be ?
for instance this one on ebay is 1.2mm cowhide leather, and also seen 1.3 leather etc for around £170 for the suit(jacket and trouser)

Are they any good ? I am not a racer but use it for trackdays and want it to be safe not just cheap

in another word how much should I expect to pay for a good leather suit?

or this which is 1.4mm but less armors

You'd be better off going for a second hand branded suit IMO, look locally then you can always go and try it on. The quality of the non name gear is every hit and miss.

That said I have a 'Alpine Wear' leather jacket it's plan black and cost me £35 second hand on ebay. Hands down the best leather jacket I have ever owned. It fits be perfectly and has been crashed in a few times and still is tip top. I've been wearing it 6 years now, I wear it more than any other jacket and it was the cheapest by far. Thumbs Up

Get a second hand set from a well known brand. Those generic ones might be fine, but I've never seen anyone wearing them. If you are just getting it for trackdays and nothing else, consider a one piece, as zips are one thing that can get fucked up on leathers fairly easily.

Sizing can be different, but if they don't list it, ask them what their size and weight is.
I buy all my leather suits second hand, as fuck paying 400+ for something I can get for 50 quid.

Example: I bought these two sets in the last week.

you see I rather get a set and be new.

finding a match used etc is not as easy. Very valid point about the stitching .

What is the cost of a branded leather and what are the brands so can try and find something like that maybe separate

Go try on new sets, find what fits, buy second hand.

I got £800's worth of Berik top of the range suit for less than half price and it had been worn about once.

I've then crashed every single time I've worn it, about six or seven times so far, and it's still ok.

Then spend £450+ and get a decent set. RST will be the cheapest and good value for money, decent protection.

Also, It is THAT easy to find a match. People do come in standard sizes and shapes.

You'll pay sweetly for new, I was around £800 for my last set of Held leathers, if you have a small budget you will just end up with cheap shit buying new...under £500 budget I'd be looking at second hand.

Pit bike racing. I crash every weekend basically. I'm still finding the limits. Can't ride a bike properly without falling off!

it sound like falling off a bike does not do any harm or cause injuries as it is happening to garth every weekend.

At what speed ? and are you fully protected using the gear etc ?

I always thought if you fall of a bike at 100 miles or so while cornering etc that is your end

Not near 100mph. 30-50 at a guess.

All the gear.

Marquez fell off at 200mph and didn't break anything.

I will just add that I generally wear a separate back protector under a leather suit. I wouldn't specifically look for something integrated.

I bought a set of slightly used leathers off eBay a few months ago, for about a third of their original price.

I'm very pleased with them, to the point where I wouldn't really go for any new ones.

I'd sooner go for slightly used ones by a tried and trusted brand.

If you buy 2 piece leathers make sure they zip together all the way around, often they will just have a little bit that zips together at the back which is no good for track riding.

Definitely have a look around, I got a hand made BKS GP suit for less than 200 quid. Far better quality than anything else I've seen for twice that money.

I'd look at either some second hand ebay stuff or a new RST kit - both should be cheaper than the one you linked to.

Also check the trousers when buying - many don't have hip armour, or even pockets to insert hip protection into, only the knees.

Same regards to particularly the back protectors - make sure its CE approved.

Many list the items as for example 'CE approved elbow and shoulder armour, and back protector'. At first glance that reads like its a CE approved back protector - but when it arrives you may find some shabby foam shit...

so I understand RST ,Dainese and Frank Thomas are good brands
actually there is Frank Thomas jacket for around £60 brand new on ebay .

Just curious to know, why should 2 peice jacket have zip all the way around? I guess if open the jacket may move from side to side or obstruct you while riding ?

To stop it tearing in half as you slide along on your arse Thumbs Up

Plenty of good quality brands to look out for many of which are actually better than the fashionable Astars/Dainese stuff which most look at first. Looking outside of the main known brands will get you the best deals.

I would say that Frank Thomas gear is middle of the road at best. Don't forget they went bust for a reason!
