Bike failed mot on a bent right bar as it was closer to the tank than the left one when on full lock.

Ive come home changed the right bar and it was still the same! I changed the left bar also but thats also the same!

So with two new bars on ,the right one which is ( bent ) is still closer to the tank! Both the bars are the same distance from the floor i measured the gap between the end of both and it was 27inch the middle was 13,5 and it was also slap bang in the middle of yoke!

Where is it bent? i cant fix something bent thats not bent!?

Bars or clip ons?

Why can you not just rotate the clip on around the fork slightly?

Provided it doesn't foul the tank at full lock I don't see why you'd fail on that?

Why not just bend it a bit a piece of tube.

Take it to a MOT station that is not staffed by chimps.

What does it say specifically on the fail sheet.

If it hits the tank, its a fail, if it does not, I cannot see an issue.

You could file a tad off the stop on the frame or forks to even them up.

Pictures......
I don't see how it's closer on one side than the other if they are both in the correct position, Even more so if it's a bar, how the fuck did you change one side??

Anyways, MOT station is run by a fucking prick if it's being failed for a slight bend in the bar, as for it being too close, the Renthal Ultra-Lows on my ER-5 are just over an inch away on full lock either side.

MOT station is run by a cunt.

It's a clip on, more than a bar.

That's confusing me even more so, how the fuck has the mounting point even moved if it's on the yoke... Surely the bar is straight if he put a new one on...

Can you unscrew them from underneath or something to adjust the angle they are at? or are they stuck at that angle permanently (stupid design if so)

Is there enough of a gap so that your thumb isnt wedged against the tank?

Ive known bikes to fail for this as apparently its deemed dangerous and it could crush your thumb....

Take it to a different test centre.

Is the only evidence of a bent bar that it is closer to the tank one way than the other? If so, it might not be bent, it could be a deformed steering stop. Or the fork could be twisted in the yoke (unlikely).

Or the tank is slightly askew...

Which is perfectly legitimate.

Goto a photo from the back of the bike, just above the rear light facing forwards with the bars straight and one from the top staring down at the yoke? Try and make em straight yea? Wink

Hi

Suspect the most likely cause is a damaged lock stop on the yoke or on the frame.

All the best

Hi

Possibly, although surprised it fails on that reason for what sounds like very minor damage.

All the best

You will not need to take much off, far less than 1 mm IMHO.

Maybe the tank isn't in the middle of the bike? Try loosening the fittings and seeing if you can move it.

Also square up the front end in the yokes.

To do this, loosen the pinch bolts on the top and bottom yokes (not so much that they drop through but enough to allow the fork legs to twist in the clamps if forced). Dunt the front wheel quite firmly, square into a wall (wheel straight and at 90 degrees to the wall) three or four times. Tighten the bolts and re-check.

If this doesn't do it and the MOT guy is only judging the "straightness" of the bars by the distance from the tank. You could also loosen the pinch bolts on the yoke, stand in front of the bike with the wheel between your knees and push the handlebars round so they sit square. Take it to the MOT, get pass certificate then repeat the bumping into wall procedure when you get home to square it all up again.

Or epoxy a slice or two of beer can or a washer to the other side just for the MOT.
