PostPosted: 13:49 - 24 Jul 2013    Post subject: Passing mod 1 and mod 2 Reply with quote

Hi all, I have completed my cbt and theory and have a 125cc that I am using daily at the moment to get experience using the bike and prepare for my mod 1 and mod 2.

Has anyone ever completed mod 1 and mod 2 by themselves with having the training? Just looking at affordable ways for me at the moment. I would really like to complete mod 1 and mod 2 this summer if possible.

Thanks all, I look forward to your replies.

I had one hour on the Mod 1 Yard a couple of weeks before I did my mod 1, just to get an idea of the course really. Other than that, no other training. Just watched youtube videos, and read up on what was needed to pass.

There are a few on here that have managed it without formal training, but I can't recall one that passed both first time; that doesn't mean to say it hasn't been done, my memory is piss poor... but if you can afford it a couple of hours with an instructor before each module could be money well spent - especially given the cost of Mod 2. Mod 1 being cheap means you can kinda just use it as a cheap alternative to training, so long as you don't need umpteen attempts!

How do you get the 500/600cc bike to do the practice and test on?

Good point. You book an instructor and use theirs, I think...

How do you get someone/training school to let you use their bike for the tests without them seeing you ride?

Answer: You generally don't. There's a lot of people, myself included, that took the old tests on their 125s and now have restricted/full licenses, but that's not possible anymore. I think Yaigi was assuming you meant to take your test on your 125 as that's what your post seemed to imply.

Unless you have a, very generous, friend who's willing to loan you their bike and take it to and from the test centre for you, and you can manage to get insurance for said bike before you actually have a license. Then I'm afraid the only other option is to go to a training school.

Would you try to take a car test with no lessons/input from anyone else? Why do people think all you need to do is turn up on a bike

Efes123, I can see my post has hit a few nerves. Honestly, I am surprised others didn't react to my post in the same way you did, I can understand your points.

I assumed that it was known that 125cc on mod 1 and mod 2 can not get you a full licence anymore, I wouldn't expect everyone to know this, I only know because I have been looking into recently.

The difference with a car licence is that you can not jump into a lower powered car and drive around as much as you like, however you can do this with a bike. I am just wondering about my options that's all.

Edit: Thanks for your link Mr.Lee

Yep, excellent thread, however:

However, this of course applies only to those taking the tests on a 125, and after 19th Jan, this means being restricted to a learner legal 125 after passing the tests.

He's intending to do one of the 'bigger bike' tests

As far as I know you can take Mods 1 & 2 on a 125 (yours, effectively..) and this will drop your L-plates and you'll have a full A1 licence, albeit restricted to 125's.
If you want to take the tests on a bigger machine you can pay the school to use one of theirs, though if you pay them for tuition in advance many schools let you use their bike for your Mods at the end of the course.

edit: null and void for what you were asking.. !

Not a problem with me Very Happy We get a lot of noobies that don't realise the tests have changed, or rather know nothing about them in the first place. So I tend to start at at an assumed level of nothingness, no offense intended. My car comment was aimed at people in general rather than you, probably came across harsher than intended.

The new tests are bloody complicated, and very few people actually understand everything about them. As Mr Lee points out, you can get a full license on a 125, but it will only allow you ride 125s. I presume you're at least 19 if you're thinking about doing the tests on a bigger bike? If you're 24 or over you can do it on the largest capacity and have an 'unlimited' license.

There was one suggestion recently that I thought was excellent advice, from Tef I think. Take a MOD 1 on your 125 Shocked Sound crazy? Not when you think about it. It only costs £15.50, so treat it as a cheap lesson, and it'll mean when you do go for your next one on a bigger bike you'll know exactly what to expect. Then pootle around on your 125 for a few months gaining road sense, then go to a school for a DAS. You should only need a 3 day one including tests, which should keep the costs right down. It's damn near impossible, or just too bloody difficult, to get a 'big bike' license without going to a school these days I'm afraid.

Im pretty much in the same boat, but as I won't realistically be able to afford a bigger machine for the best part of 6-8 months yet im taking the route Mike suggests in this thread..

https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=275336

It all up to you and how much of a hurry you're in to move up.

ok, thanks for the post.

I didn't realise the pros of doing the mod 1 and mod 2 on a 125cc until I read your post.

Would be nice to ditch the 'L' plates Smile

I wonder what the waiting times are for a mod 1 and mod 2 test, I will find out via DVLA website.

Likewise if I passed, I probably would still ride my 125cc for at least another couple of months before looking to exchange it for a bigger bike.

ummm, interesting...

If you've had no lessons, then it's likely that you'll fail the first attempt at MOD1, I did Very Happy But at £15 a pop, it's worth persevering. Just book your MOD2 at least 3 days after your 1, then you can change it with no cost if you do fail. If you don't, then you have 3 days to practice your road skills. MOD 2 is a piece of cake if you've been riding a while, and you have a sensible head on you.

I try to practice in the car parks, slow riding, slaloms, figure of 8's sometimes, but I know it is nothing like actually being tested on it.

I wonder how much cheaper the training would be in the winter time? As it will be a while until I exchange for a bigger bike anyway, this might help to make it more affordable.

Not very much, if at all. The place I did my training has the exact same prices all year round.

3 day is generally around £350. I'm sure I've seen an add in the top banner advertising it for that including CBT & Test fees, which is a bloody good price.

Just tried multiple refreshes but nothing shows. Just try searching on Google. Where about are you? My missus used Cam Rider for her CBT and loved them https://www.camrider.com/uk-locations/ipswich/prices-and-courses.html They do a 4 day course for £399 but you have to add £90 for tests. You shouldn't have too much problem finding a 3 day for £350, apart from maybe London. Be aware that they will assess you, and if they don't think you can do it, they probably won't sell you the course (if they're good that is).

I do like the idea of doing Mod 1 on your own 125 - it's a cheap way of practising it and seeing if you're ready.

As to doing A2 / A on your own bike, I believe that Bikesure will cover you on a big bike for 2 weeks on your provisionaL license.

So you could get the bike and do some private road practice. Do be careful though, as anywhere to which you and the rozzers enjoy a right of access is public, regardless of whether its a road or not. Car parks and industrial estates and yards are not private unless access is effectively restricted.

I can't recall if you're required to have insurance for mod 1, but they only ask you to tick a box anyway and you're not going to need it (unless you run over the examiner).

Then get your mod 2 booked and get your insurance to start in time for that (but buy it well beforehand so that you're on the MID). You'll (just) have time for a 2nd bite at it if you fail.

All of which relies on you having a legal way to get the bike to your practice area and the test centre. Van, trailer, have a chum ride it and/or pillion you there (using his own 3rd party other bike cover if necessary), it's achievable legally, just not easily.

Folk on here have done it, and it is very satisfying to get it done without involving a training school (I did it on my 125 under the old system).

If you tell us where you are or better yet put it in your profile then there might be some locals who could help you out with it if it seems like a laugh.

Really can't recommend just doing the MOD1 if only as a test run. What have you got to lose? Personally, I found getting up to speed around the corner the hardest on a 125. Stay in 2nd and rev the nuts off it Thumbs Up
