Hi All,

Just got a ZX7R, 1999. Had a full tank of fuel in when I got it, confirmed by opening the tank and looking.

Today, after a 20 mile ride and just as I clicked over to 80 miles on it the engine starts spluttering and lurching. Ah, out of fuel! Click the tap onto reserve, same continues happening and I pull over. As soon as I pull over it cuts out. Hmm.

I slosh the tank around and I can definitely hear some fuel in there. Not a lot but enough for reserve. Bike refuses to restart. A quick call to my dad and a 5 litre can of fuel in the bike and she fires right up.

This could be one of two things:

1) It's a bit thirsty (Possible)

2) It's vaporising fuel when hot (since by the time he arrived it would have cooled down and according to the Kawasaki forums this is also possible)

3) It's doing something else when hot and cooled down by the time he arrived.

So basically I'm looking for some other owners/ex owners to tell me how many miles they get to a tank before they have to switch to reserve. The only thing I can think that might be different on this bike is the full stainless system and jetting to suit (but I can't see it making that much difference).

I'm going to clean my tank out at the weekend and hopefully get the reserve working but it would be nice to know how many miles to a tank I should be getting.

Thanks!

Silly question but have you checked the breather tube? When you opened the tank was there a whoosh? If the tank isn't breathing that would cause fuel starvation on both main and reserve.

The next time it happens, pop the tank open and see if it fixes itself.

They are thirsty.

Brim the tank and see if it still does it? Its not exactly a difficult to find out....

I did try this, I mainly opened the tank to check the fuel level but there was no whoosh. Interestingly the bike does seem to whistle after a run, it's a very high pitched wine from somewhere around the engine. Wonder if that has anything to do with it.

Yeah, I just don't want to get stuck miles from home with a bike that won't run because of an undiagnosed issue. I just wanted an idea of the fuel range so I could see if I was somewhere in the right ball park and if I'm not so I can do some investigative work. Thumbs Up

drop the oil and see if there is any petrol in it. If it's a new bike to you anyway, it's worth changing the oil and filter, and it'll give you a little peace of mind.

My mate had a ZX7r, what a pile of shit that was, tank range of around 100 miles, has yours been modified?

If you need some parts though let me know, everything but the front end and the plastics.....oh and rebuild the brakes, they are shite as well

Had the 7R's predecessor, the ZXR750. I tried to go touring on it and ran out of petrol before I arrived at the ferry. I live in London.

That being said, I had a few issues resulting in a vast amount of oil consumption as well as petrol but 80 miles out of a tank is not unusual for a 7R. I had 70 to a tank with the 750 if I pushed it... which I always did.

Lovely bike by the way. Used to love them back in the day.

I used to have a ZXR750 J1 model.

It was great on fuel and I regularly got over 200 miles a tank on long stretches.

On my commute the MPG would range between 40-50.

When I got my ZZR600, the same thing happened the first time I ran it to reserve (albeit at more than 80 miles Laughing). I couldn't work out what it was. Took it to a bike shop and after much puzzling they discovered somebody had sent the reserve fuel routing back into the tank, so essentially it had no reserve...could be the same thing.

I cant remember exactly how many miles my P7 used to do after being rejetted and race systemed, but I do remember my mates SP1 used to run out before mine lol.

IIRC it used to hit reserve about 100 mile on a 'spirited' run.

The reserve thing is not a new thing to me, it used to hit reserve and then cut out regardless of how quick I was on the tap switch, but would normally restart after giving it scarey amounts of starter. To the point where is was draining the battery.

Only way I got round it was to stay off reserve and refill about the 80 mile mark.

This, exactly the same for my old 7r.

Yep, 100 miles sounds the same as my old one!

I had this happen to me on my teapot just after I bought it, it cut out with about 4 or 5 litres in.

Turned out shite was blocking the bottom of the fuel filter.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll do an oil change next week and give the tank a clean out at the same time. The only mods I know of are the Stainless system and jetting to suit which would increase fuel consumption a little, but not a whole lot I shouldn't think.

I'll likely give it a full service. Oil, filter, plugs, Brake fluid and fork oil. 80 Miles to a tank isn't brilliant, it means I'm getting about 26MPG but I guess it's not the end of the world.

Thanks for the advice so far, I'll update when I have more.

They're surprisingly sharp on this one. I'm sure I could easily lock the front without too much trouble. The rear is definitely on for a rebuild though.

Bonus your rear brake works, the one I rode it didn't, the fronts didn't either, they are shit up and down the box as well, depending how it goes there maybe some bits up for grabs, stubby can if you're ghey enough to fit one, which I no doubt you are.
