Hi basically i'm having a little trouble with a valve adjustment, there's a top end tapping noise and i'm pretty sure it's the valves when i went to adjust them the valve on the left hand side when facing the left hand side of the bike side with the chain cover.

Not sure what the valve is called but the black metal rod that attaches off it and down into the engine is loose and wobblly which is what i think the noise is, now is this supposed to be like that can i tighten it or do i have to buy another and what is it called Embarassed

Do you know what your clearances should be? you will need feeler gauges to measure them.

No way is it 0.8mm that equates to 0.032" and you can drive a bus through that gap. I run my 500 at 0.002 in and ex and BCF has a guy that can weld to 0.004", go check your resources my child.

This.^^

Your engine is millimetres away from self-destructing. Tighten the locknut on your inlet tappett before you do anything else.

You need to set your valve clearances. This needs to be done with the engine in a specific position or it's meaningless.
I strongly suggest you buy yourself a workshop manual.

OP, I presume you removed the flywheel turning nut and are able to manually turn the engine? Crank it round a few times and keep knocking you fingers on the various pushrods and valves to see how much their looseness/tightness varies throughout the cycle. Then you'll know if that pushrod is bad or not. It'll also give you an idea of how things should feel as the engine goes around.

With the engine at TDC (look for the mark on the flywheel view hole, which I presume you've revealed - or have you literally just taken the rocker cover off and got to work Thinking ), get the valves set to their required clearances. With the the valves set up and positioned properly, you can then move on to fix any other issues.

You do need a feeler gauge though Laughing

If he can't find the correct clearance, or cannot notice that a locknut is almost fully wound out, then the valve clearance adjustments may be beyond his abilities.

It's ok and easy to tell people to do work themselves when it's not their bike/transport.

The fact is, he has no idea what the components even are, and is not just trying to set clearances, but is also trying to diagnose the cause of engine noise, there has to be a line where you let somebody else look that knows what they're doing.

Someone has to start somewhere. Best thing for him is to get a Haynes manual and start reading!
