Good evening people of BCF, it's been a while!

Since my bike not selling on fleabay I've decided to restore it. While I've got everything in pieces and this is going to be a long haul restoration, I'm going to push the boat out and make it mine, trying not to make it look tacky and shit in the process!

I'm thinking of fitting a hydraulic clutch on it (had one on the Bandit 600 when this was with the insurance company after my accident and loved it!) and have read somewhere that some guy in Germany fitted a belt drive to his.

While these sound on the surface like attractive ideas to me considering I'm all for low maintenance options, I thought I'd put the ideas to the wisdom of BCF to tear to pieces before I go and do anything possibly outlandish, expensive or ultimately pointless!
Also, any other wonderful ideas for things to do to my SV while it's currently in several pieces?

PS, it's a first gen bikini faired.

Thanks in advance!

Willson

My honest advice is to put it back together, sell it cheap and buy a faster bike that suits your needs.

No matter what you do to it, it will still be an SV650 at the end of the day.

Not really my thing metalangel but thanks for the contribution!
Trying to keep it in the general sportish/commuterish/tourerish(maybe?) bracket!

Edit:
Computid: I know it will, I'm not trying to make it insanely quick, I'm happy with the performance as is truth be known. I want to make it a bit different but I'm not too concerned with performance. Any economical gains are always a bonus though, although unlikely!

If you go the 'org (sv650.org) there's lots of fun SV projects other people have done that might inspire you.

I've had a look there, but only briefly. I'll have another look but I thought it'd be good to post the question here!

Nah... I am also of the mind that its an SV, all you'll do it put money into something that is currently worth a small bit of cash.

Time to empty that wallet and buy yourself a new bike, your heart will love you for it.. Wink

Paddy my wallet is currently empty as I've got to save up some of my pennies. Pitter patter of a small drain on my resources coming in December! It's not sold through two listings on eBay, and it still runs like a boss so I'm keeping it for now at least!

Selling it isn't happening at the moment, although when I can afford it I'll probably get something faster in the future, but this is the current machine and it's here to stay for the time being!

First round of bidding I got up to 580, second round nothing. It's done 44k.
Is £800-£900 too much to ask for for such a machine?

44k SV... £800 classified ad is what I'd have done.. but I'm scared of SVs...SVs with mileage makes me worry more Laughing

Whatever you do with it, don't let it soak up funds Thumbs Up

What do you consider high milage then? For both bikes and cars? I've heard of both running for ridiculous amounts of milage, or is it dependant upon the make/model etc?

My Varadero is worth <£400. It has 75,000 miles on it.
I would consider 35k a high miles SV, but would look at an R1 and consider it standard mileage.

I should have faith in smaller engines given the unkillable 125, but seems SVs go for low money past 30k Sad

Yeah, it's not currently clean and tidy, or in one piece for that matter.

But anyway, back on topic, if it was another bike, what would you do to it? Wink

I'm doing as much of the work as I can myself, I also know a fabricator that always does me a good deal as well so that's helping keep costs down. It's those posh bits I need some more ideas on though!

Improve the suspension. Can you fit cartridge emulators to that model? Hagon shock will be better than the original on the back,

Improve the brakes.

Then sort the engine. The standard SV engine is cocking dull, just when it starts to get exciting it hits the redline. You seem to want to burn money, so get some expensive camshafts to give it a proper step in the power delivery, followed by lots of dyno time to get the fuelling dialled in.

Twin cans, front end suspension swap, new rear shock.

Use those as a base, looking about £1k for nice bits. Laughing
