Hi everyone,

I've just booked two days of DAS training with Scooterden in London. I have been riding my little PS 125 for about a year now, and had a 30 min free go on a CBF 125 a couple of days ago to get used to the gears etc. After the free practice session, I felt quite confident, and the instructor himself suggested I went straight for A licence. What are the chances of me passing Mod 1 & 2 on a big bike, considering I'll have two full days training on one but I don't have a great deal of experience on a geared machine? Also, does anyone have feedback on the above mentioned training school?

My post is rather lame, I cant wait to post something more exciting like what bike to chose once I've got my licence...

Thanks!

Well, everyone's learning curves are different, but to answer your question, I did my CBT on a geared SR 125, then did a lesson on an ER5 before my mod 1 and passed, then a lesson before my mod 2 and failed, but on a crappy wet day, for a silly mistake. One more lesson and passed like a boss.

So yeah, entirely possible Thumbs Up But at the end of the day, it depends entirely on you.

Good luck Thumbs Up

I think the Mod 1 slow manoeuvres will be trickiest for you with the gears. Get used to riding really slow using your clutch to take of the power when you need to.

You can do it - it's well worth putting in for, all that you have to lose is a little money but you might well pass first time.
You have the riding experience so mod 2 should be relatively easy - all you have to master is the mod 1 manoeuvres with gears and this should be relatively easy for you to pick up.
Good luck!

Two days isn't a lot, but it all depends on your natural ability. If the instructor thinks you can do it, then why not. Can I ask how much the 2 day DAS course cost you, and does it include test fees?

A lot of it is confidence, there's nothing particularly hard in the tests. It's certainly achievable.

I definitely second that! I epically failed my first mod 1 because I was a) ridiculously nervous and b) convinced I wouldn't pass it. FYI I ran over the first two cones on the slalom lol. However, the examiner allowed me to finish the test as a practice and I was 100% ok on it because I knew it didn't matter. Second time round I was much more confident and I passed it no problem.

I wasn't worried about mod 2 because I'd been riding on roads on my 125 for 18 months beforehand - it was just a case of riding sensibly like I always had done, but on a bigger bike.

I had 3 days training in total but it was split over about 2 months because of a cock up at the DVLA with my licence.

Right there ^^^ is a bloody good reason why it's not a bad idea to take the tests on a 125 before going for a bigger bike.

Right, so it's training Monday and Wednesday and mod1 Thursday at 9am! It's happening pretty fast but I will give it my best shot. I'm more nervous about mod1 than 2, as I have been riding for about 12 months and always been quite sensible. I did a scootersafe course and the instructor was very happy with my riding, so mod 2 should be alright. Efes, the DAS so far costed me £415.00 and that is £300 for two days training on a big bike and £115.00 for the test on the same bike including the fee. Fingers crossed the all thing should cost me £595.00

Thanks again everyone for the support and the tips!

First day of DAS training done, it was pretty hard I must say. We did no specific Mod 1 training except a bit of slow riding and figure of 8 with no cones. All day was spent riding about in north London, to get familiar with the big engine, the gears, and the breaking system. It wasn't a disaster, I stalled the bike a couple of times in traffic but no major issues. More training on Wednesday, hopefully more Mod 1 exercising and then the big day on Thursday first thing in the morning... Good luck to me!

Just try keep relaxed not that uncommon to stall i did on my test, main thing is don't panic as if you start rushing to start the bike and continue without doing your checks again before setting off you're just making yourself more problems Thumbs Up

Can't imagine what its like doing a test in london though Shocked bristol traffic wasn't ideal for mine but its no london Laughing

Does your school have somewhere where they can set the whole, or most, of the mod 1 course up? I ended up using 2 different schools and one of them did this - it helped no end compared to just trying to do the individual bits on their own. If not, and if you feel you need the practice (which of course you may not, not everyone is as pants at cone avoidance as me lol), you could book a single day with another school who do. I swear this is the main reason it only took me 2 attempts at mod 1!

Good luck with day 2 on Weds Thumbs Up

Unfortunately my school doesn't have the facility to replicate the mod1 track, I think we will use some cones tomorrow but it'll be only for the slalom and figure of 8 in a car park or something. I'll be able to tell you I more after tomorrow's session at some point. It'll be a hard couple of days, considering I'm doing a session tomorrow morning, then off to work until late and then test day on Thursday at 6am!
