PostPosted: 08:19 - 26 Jul 2013    Post subject: Biker DNA code Reply with quote

Something reminded me recently of a fad from the 90s called Geek Code (oddly, I think it was a recent discussion over the pros and cons of the NC700). I wonder if we could come up with one for bikers, or is there one already?

My boss at work, for example, can't comprehend why anyone would purchase a motorcycle that isn't the most powerful available at the time -- if it can't do 200mph, it's not a motorcycle. I, on the other hand, can't understand why anyone would want a bike that can easily lead to a loss of license in first gear or lift the front wheel in third. Another example: I have zero interest in motorsports, of any kind, while others got into bikes mostly for track days and MotoGP.

Obviously, we're riding our "biker's code." We don't need random letters and symbols when sitting on cruiser or GSXR. But there are other aspects that aren't so easy to tell by just looking at the bike or rider. Some possible examples:

M: ability to do one's own maintenance, ranging from knowing how to check oil levels (--) through to building an engine with nothing more than iron ore and a smelter (++++++++).
L: Supports or disapproves of road rules, speed cameras, etc. Might range from currently sitting magistrate (++++) to anarchist (-----).
S: interest in motor sport, track days, getting the knee down. Mine might be: S--, while my boss would have S+++.
R: Attitude toward risk -- wears t-shirt, shorts and sandels on Fireblade (++++). Dressed head-to-toe in day-glow orange, with an airbag waistcoat, strung with LEDs (----).
E: experience, measured by some formula of years + miles.

What other categories/factors are there that aren't immediately obvious by looking at the person's current set of wheels?

Hang on for a sec, I have a question: Why? Or more accurately: What's the point? Confused

This isn't any, really. It was just a random thought. There was no point to the Geek Code too, other than being able to tell at a glance on email or usenet whether someone was into X Files or role playing.

I find sociology interesting -- tribes, cultures -- so it's just another way of musing about what kind of groups there are in motorcycling.

This reminds me of a documentary about 80s gay clubs where the punters would have different coloured tissues sticking out of their pockets to explain their sexual preferences.

This isn't an online dating service for the socially inadequate.

In order to never fail at anything you must first never try to do anything. Thumbs Up

Not quite, but have you been in Dear Auntie BCF section? It get more like a helpline for socially inadequate/inept every day. I seriously don't understand why anyone would want to ask a forum full of strangers how to run their lives. What sort of thinking goes from "Should I marry this woman?" to "I know, I'll ask on the forum." Confused

At the risk of digging myself in deeper, I'm surprised at the reactions. I think it could be that I wasn't explaining myself: this is just a thought experiment -- what are the factors that separate bikers and makes one look at the NC700/GSXR/Harley and go "ooh" and another go "ugh". That's all. I'm not suggesting an actual system that people can stick in their sigs, on their lids, or whatever. That's not what the Geek Code was really used for either. It was a funny/interesting thought experiment on the geek culture.

I'll shut up now (and change my username, and move town...)
