Recovery guy on a facebook group I go on was called out to a guy riding a GSX1400. It was making a 'funny noise' but he continued to ride it. It then made a loud bang and something hit the guys foot and the bike stopped working.

The Recovery guy was greeted with this:

https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc1/717_10201618104392456_1698779250_n.jpg
https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/996559_10201618104232452_771681916_n.jpg
https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/5341_10201618102632412_243736378_n.jpg

Apparently the owner (who did not know enough to know that a rod had come through the cases) had the garage add a few degrees of ignition advance to his Yoshi box. The bike already had an ignition advancer fitted, and also apparently someone had tweaked the PCIII map to add a few degrees of advance. I think he was running a total of 12 degrees of ignition advance.

When the recovery guy asked him why this was done he replied "people on the forums said it would make the bike go better".

Now, I doubt anyone advised him to advance his ignition by 12 degrees, but he probably misinterpreted or misunderstood what was being said, and perhaps did not realise that his bike was already running ignition advance.

Goes to show, you need to be careful about the information you dig up on forums and what you use it for. Thumbs Up Smile

erk.

Quite lucky it only 'hit' his foot rather than removing it.

Surely with that much advance it would run like absolute shit and the garage would have noticed?

OP: "Hi guys, my bike's got an ignition advancer and the PCIII map's been tweaked to add a few degrees of advance, but it still runs pretty slow is there anything I can do to make it 'go' better?"
1st reply: "I think you need more advance Rolling Eyes "
OP: "OK will do that thanks."

Clearly wasn't BCF then, as first replies would have been;

* potato
* you need a new powerband (red is best)
* stick a turbo on it

So there is no possibility that there may be a few recovery guys who also happen to be bikers and/or gear heads?

Recovery guy would have asked owner, owner would have said 'I got them to advance the igntion.'

I think the recovery guy is actually a motorcycle mechanic that happens to go out to the odd breakdown.

Plus from what they said on the facebook group the owner added the PCIII and the ignition advancer after the original garage added and tweaked the Yoshi box.

Forgetting the ignition advancer for the moment, I'm not sure why in the hey-ull anyone would want a Yoshi box AND a power commander? Seems crazy to me.

I doubt any forum would specifically say that having both would be good. However, I suspect one forum said "PCIII is the dogs" and another said "Yoshi, all the way, it's the mutts!" and so he thought "I know, I'll have both! AND and ignition advancer too!"

Like these ads for car performance parts that say "Adds 20bhp!" Yes, it might do with £10k of other well set up mods, but you can't just add three induction kits to get 60bhp! :facepalm:

methinks you underestimate the power of the derp side.</vader>

Despite being a well-established meme, how many n00bs have fallen for the 'new powerband' line?

When I was a kid, my stepdad used to constantly bang on about advance and retard on the various cortinas, imps and maxi's that we had to name a few.

Obviously in this case the retard advanced too far?

Why the hell would someone think that you can mess with ignition 'timing' to that level? Timing being the operative word!

He could have given me that bike and I could have sold my vara and passed my test! Mind you if its a 1400 I might aswell get a bloody car!

err rides a 1400 and still needs more power? First thing I'd be doing is checking his chicken strips, bet your life he's the biggest pussycat on the road and a straightline warrior.
